Tammy Jean Mathews, 65, of Kokomo passed away on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 7:55 pm at Ascension Seton Facility. Tammy succumbed to health complications and passed peacefully while surrounded by her loved ones.
She was born Tammy Jean Pierson on August 1, 1960 to William Riley and Leona Jean Pierson in Kokomo. She was selfless with a servant’s heart from a young age. As a teenager, she helped care for her ill mother, she was a mentor in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, and she enjoyed participating in the Explorer’s Club.
Tammy graduated from Northwestern High School in 1978. After high school, Tammy got married and had 2 beautiful children, Travis and Crystal, that she loved dearly and would do anything for. Her selfless, caring spirit then led her to go obtain her nursing degree from Indiana University of Kokomo, graduating in 1993. She worked at Howard Community Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Clinton County Hospital, and various other hospitals as she was a traveling agency nurse toward the end of her career. Her first marriage ended in 1998, and she later met and married the love of her life, Keith Mathews, on August 30, 2004.
After over 20 years as an RN specializing in obstetrics, Tammy retired early. She truly enjoyed her part in helping to bring many lives into this world and helping to care for patients. After she and Keith were both retired, they lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends experiencing all that life has to offer by traveling, sailing, shopping, and motorcycle riding.
She was an adventurous soul; she and Keith even rode their motorcycles through Alaska and back to Kokomo. She also really enjoyed trying a multitude of experiences such as “Murder Mystery” trains, escape rooms, dinner musicals, and costume dinner parties.
Tammy was a kind, caring, loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her grandchildren were her world. She took pride in being at every birthday celebration, school event, and sporting event. She and Keith would take the kids to enjoy different experiences such as “The Polar Express” train ride, baseball games, seeing Santa or the Easter Bunny, musicals, Disney on Ice, and much more. She wanted nothing more than for her grandchildren to enjoy life and have memories with their mamaw and papaw.
Tammy was preceded in death by her parents William Riley and Leona Jean Pierson, sister and brother-in-law Beverly and Bill Henry, her Aunt and Uncle Barb and Bill White, and her cousin Howard White. She is survived by her husband Keith Mathews, son Travis (Angie) Williams, daughter Crystal Williams, 4 grandkids: Paige, Easton, and Gracelyn Williams, and Bryson Hoffman, her cousin Tina Carter, her 2nd cousins Jason and Matt Carter (all of Kokomo), and her niece Leona Jean of Louisville, KY.
Visitation will take place from 2:00 pm until the start of funeral services at 5:00 pm on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Ellers Mortuary & Cremation Center, 3400 S. Webster Street, Kokomo. Share a memory with the family at www.ellersmortuary.com.
