Walter Daniel Schmutz Jr.

Walter Daniel "Dan" Schmutz, Jr., 85, of Kokomo, passed away from July 2, 2018 at 10:03 AM at St. Vincent Kokomo. He was born August 7, 1932 in Covington, Kentucky to the late Walter D. Schmutz, Sr. and Marie E. (Whitaker) Schmutz. He married Reatha Geraldine "Gerry" (Waters) Schmutz on June 15, 1957 in Nashville, Tennessee, and she survives.
Dan graduated from Isaac Litton High School in 1950 where he played the cornet in the Marching 100. He attended Vanderbilt University before enlisting in the United States Army in 1953. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in 1956. He graduated from Mississippi State University in 1957. He received his MBA from the University of Tennessee in 1973.
Dan was active in Boy Scouts the majority of his life. He was an Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, and earned his Wood Badge. He continued to be active in scouting until the end of his life.
In addition to his wife, Dan is survived by daughters, Karen (Paul) Zimmerman of Greentown, IN and Sandi (Jeff) Freeman of Haughton, LA; grandchildren, Melissa Englehart, Brian Smith, Leanna Zimmerman, Angela (Ethan) Stewart, Sam Smith, and Sergio Velaquez; and great-grandchildren, Alaina Stewart and Josiah Englehart, and brother, Philip (Connie) Schmutz. Dan was predeceased by his parents and great-granddaughter, Avery Danielle Stewart.
The Memorial Service for Walter Daniel Schmutz, Jr. will be held at McKendree United Methodist Church (523 Church Street, Nashville, TN 37219) at 10:00 AM, on Saturday, August 25, 2018. The Rev. Stephen Handy will officiate. In lieu of flowers (due to allergies), the family is asking for a donation to McKendree United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN or the National Sleep Foundation
