
Owen Peter Carter, of Kilauea, affectionately known as “Papa Owen” passed away on Jan. 6, 2025, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, with his daughters by his side.
Owen was preceded in death by his parents Augustine Anselm and Phyllis Marie Carter and grandson Makani Alexander.
He is survived by his siblings Paul, Joan and John Carter, many nieces and nephews of Brisbane, Australia.
He was blessed with and leaves behind his children Jeannine (Isa) Espinoza, Nikki Carter, Elise Carter, grandchildren Mahina Alexander, Thalia Espinoza, Tristan Espinoza, Shyloh McCann, Tre Arroyo, Xia Parrish, great-grandchildren Stella Geimer and Rizen Solywoda, all of Kilauea and Hanalei.
Owen was born in Brisbane, Australia, on March 4, 1943. As a young man he worked as a lifeguard on the Gold Coast and later worked to become a journeyman carpenter.
He traveled the world, exploring Europe with his mates and later working as a teamster in the Yukon, before settling down on Kaua’i, his true home, in the late 1960’s. Here he raised a family and worked as a contractor/ builder.
He was proud to serve as a North Shore Lion and had enjoyed volunteering with Kore and Habitat for Humanity. His true loves were this island and his family and friends. He will be missed by many.
Please join his family for a celebration of life at Anini Beach pavilion #1 (by the boat ramp) on Sunday, March 9, from 3 to 6 p.m.
