"If Flowers Grow in Heaven"

If flowers grow in heaven, Lord, then pick a bunch for me.  Then place them in my grandmother’s arms and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her that I love and miss her and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, but there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away.

Dear Mommy,

I’m grateful that I was with you during your last week with us.  I’ll always cherish the last words that you said to me which were “You’re here again?” (Ilocano) and “I love you” (English).  You taught me things that I never appreciated until I became an adult.  You had me wash my clothes by hand before I was allowed to use the washing machine, and you wanted us to turn off the lights when we weren’t in the house or a room.  Your best advice was, “If you’re going to spend your money, spend it on food.”

Your skills as a cook and baker were well known; and caring for your plants, flowers, and vegetable garden kept you busy.  You were also quite the sales person when there was fish and vegetables to be sold.  Besides raising 3 children, you helped to care for your grandchildren and children of friends/neighbors.  You enjoyed planning and attending gatherings, and talking with family and friends.  If I tried to call home and the line was busy for hours, I always knew who was on the phone.  Your gift of socializing and “gabbing” has definitely been passed down to several generations.  You were a strict mom and once told me that you would make us keep our hands behind our backs so we wouldn’t touch anything in a store or someone’s home.  We always yelled “MOM” when we argued as kids, hoping you would settle things.  You were also the one we ran to when we were scared of the monthly sirens going off.

Jonathan and I have a favorite memory of you saying, “Thank God, I prayed and prayed for a boy!”, when you found out you were going to have a grandson.  You and Sean had a special bond.  This was evident during his last visit with you, when he insisted on seeing you twice a day to help with your meals.  You would just look at each other and hold hands.  No words were needed.

You had been the family’s Matriarch for many years so I know your Spirit is with us, watching and guiding.  But with that said, we will miss you.
