

Anthony was born in Gloucester MA in 1924. His family moved to San Diego when he was 6 months old. His father Manuel was a fisherman and fished the local waters. Anthony grew up on Columbia St. with his 2 older brothers and 3 younger sisters. When he was 14 he left school to go fishing and fished until he joined the Navy in Nov. 1943. Anthony was on the Landing Craft Unit #3 out of Fort Ord, CA. He was a seaman at age 18 when they landed a Marine Division of the island of Bougainville while Japanese planes bombed the island. After the war ended Anthony went back to commercial fishing for 22 years then left to work for Scripps Institute of Oceanography. He sailed on the Melville which took him around the world twice. His favorite memories were visiting Pitcairn Islands where he met Charles Christian who was a descendant of Fletcher Christian and slept in his home. Other favorite travels took him to Easter Island, Antarctica, New Guinea, South America and Alaska for walruses and king crab.
Anthony was an active member of The American Legion Post 303 out of El Cajon and was also a member of the Pearl Harbor Club. Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, 1st wife Ortensia (Toodles) and grandson Anthony Mazzara. Anthony is survived by his 2nd wife Mary and daughters Toni Mazzara, Marlene Gilman and Grand Daughters Elizabeth Brennan, Jessica Gilman and Great Grandsons Alex Mazzara, Charlie and Leo Brennan.
