Derek Adam Burns, age 36, passed away on August 31, 2026. Born on May 10, 1990, Derek was born and raised in San Diego, California, and his life reflected a steady devotion to learning, service, and the people who loved him most. Beloved by many, he will be missed so much.

Derek attended Valhalla High School and graduated in 2008. From an early age, he carried himself with a quiet wisdom and a kind-hearted spirit that left a lasting impression on classmates, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Derek served in the Air Force for six years, a faithful commitment that spoke to his sense of duty and purpose. He attended the Air Force Academy and graduated in 2012, later earning a master’s degree at AFIT in Applied Physics. His dedication and thoughtful mind continued to guide him in his work for NASA in Lancaster, California—an endeavor that reflected both his discipline and his steady pursuit of excellence.

A Funeral Service will be held at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Dr, San Diego, CA 92122, on October 16, 2026, at 3:30 pm.
