Dexter was born on October 5, 1939 in La Mesa, CA to Charles and Ruth (Broderick) Levy. Dexter was the eldest of brothers- David Levy (deceased) and Dana Levy of Oklahoma. On August 24, 1968, he married Frances Richey. They raised one son, Court Levy.
Dexter was a member of UA 230 since 1959 and served as Business Manager from 1980 to 1986. Later, he served as both human relations and Missile Park facility manager for General Dynamics until retirement in 1997.
Dexter absolutely loved actively participating in all La Mesa City Council activities, especially in his role on the Citizens Review Board for Grossmont Hospital.
Dexter always had a passion for helping those with less of a voice. Whether in service to the members of his union, being an uncle and father figure to those with a need or being an amazing grandfather; he was always the most patient and loving person in the room. His passion for teaching was evident in all of his interactions and was the person that everyone came to when they needed help with anything.
Dexter was proudly a member of one of the first jet ski clubs in California, San Diego Jet Ski Club. He enjoyed many jet ski trips, club meetings and races with family and close friends. Dexter coached many softball teams with his wife at La Mesa Bobby Sox. As his son grew up, Dexter was always actively involved in his sports including La Mesa American Little League, soccer teams and swim teams. Dexter was a longtime fan and season ticket holder for the San Diego Chargers football team and enjoyed attending games with friends and family. Dexter enjoyed all sports at all levels and could be found supporting all of his nieces and nephews and grandchildren at their games with his booming voice and signature whistle.
Dexter loved home repair projects. Most friends and family members probably have some home repair or remodel project in their home that Dexter helped with. For many years, Dexter put up a giant lighted Christmas tree at his home in La Mesa and hosted a "tree lighting party" to celebrate every year.
In Dexter's later years as mobility became more challenging, he moved to New York to live in a shared home with his grandchildren for four years before moving back home to La Mesa. During those years in New York, he took on the role of driving all 6 of the grandchildren to and from school, often giving their friends a ride home as well. He took them to school activities, sports, and friends' houses. He made a detailed schedule to coordinate drop off and pick up times. He kept a constant supply of candies in the car to offer to his beloved passengers. His kindness and giving nature will always be remembered.
Dexter was preceded in death by his father, Charles Levy, his mother, Ruth (Broderick) Levy, and his brother, David Levy. He is survived by his wife, Frances Levy, his son, Court Levy, daughter-in-law, Amy Levy, his brother, Dana Levy, two sisters-in-law, Melba Summers and Mary Bush of Santee, CA, six grandchildren, Kellen Levy, Tyrese Levy, Jeffrey Levy, Joyce Levy, Sarah Levy and Edward Levy and many nieces and nephews.
