It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Maricela Romo Ruiz. Maricela Romo Ruiz (“Mari”) was born December 2, 1960 in Tijuana, Mexico. She passed away October 16, 2023 in the comfort of her home surrounded by family.
Mari was a gentle woman who lived her life as simple and quietly as possible. She had a quiet strength to her and humble presence. She was kind and affectionate through her actions. She was a hardcore cat lover. She was humorous in her own way. She was not flashy by any means. She would rarely leave her house without first una manita de gato- with her classic bangs (tupe), half or full ponytail, thick eyeliner in her lower lash, dangling earrings and a pop of color in her clothing. She handled life’s surprises with grace. If you were lucky enough to have known her, you would know the rare treasure that she was. She was a mother, grandmother, tia and hermana.
A loving and devoted single mother to twin daughters Viviana and Erika. She devoted her life to raising her daughters (las gemelas) into the women they are today and continued to be attentive towards them even in adulthood. She did whatever needed to be done to make sure that her daughters had everything they needed and wanted. She was most proud of her daughters being first generation college graduates. With the help of her daughters, she was able to retire a few years ago. She devoted this time to her family, especially her granddaughter, which she affectionately referred to as mi Tati.
A loving grandmother to her vibrant granddaughter, her amor, mi Tati. She cared for her from birth, potty trained her in record time (2 weeks!), taught her some Spanish and when it was time for her to start school- walked her to school. She enjoyed every minute and made lasting memories with her niña hermosa.
A loving tia to her nieces and nephews. She was someone who would always say mijo or mija, welcoming you into her home and making you feel at home. Always there to help whenever needed.
A loving hermana. The one to lean on by any of her siblings. She was someone to watch novellas, drink a Cafecito and go shopping with.
Mari will be missed by all that got the privilege to know her. She was taken too soon but she is survived by her twin daughters, granddaughter, son-in-law and several brothers, sisters and nieces/nephews and let’s not forget, her cats. She will be forever remembered by everyone that came across her, especially her family.
