Robert Egger, Jr.
April 21, 1933 – May 25, 2025
Robert “Bob” Egger, a lifelong San Diegan and proud member of the San Diego Swiss Club, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 92.
Bob was the eldest son of Swiss immigrants, Robert Sr. and Emma Egger. He was raised alongside his siblings, Walter and Mary, on the family dairy—an early foundation for what would become the Egger legacy.
In Bob’s early years, he attended school in San Ysidro and later Army Navy Academy. He went on to study Agriculture at Cal Poly University, combining his knowledge with his farming roots. In 1954, he co-founded Egger & Ghio Company, a produce growing and distribution business based in Otay Mesa and the South Bay area in San Diego. His passion for the land and his commitment to hard work helped build a business that served the nation for decades.
Bob’s Swiss heritage was a central part of his identity. Following in his father’s footsteps—a founding member of the San Diego Swiss Club—Bob took immense pride in being Swiss-American. In his younger years, he competed in Schwingen, traditional Swiss wrestling. And even after retiring from competition, he remained a visible and respected figure at the judge’s table. Bob was a Lifetime Honorary Member and served as a Director on the Board of the San Diego Swiss Club.
Family was at the heart of Bob’s life. Sundays began with 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Charles Church, followed by family waterskiing outings at the Coronado Bay. The family also cherished camping trips to the Colorado River—memories full of sunshine, mosquitos, (haha) and togetherness.
As the years went on, Bob’s passions evolved. He found great joy in playing golf with his son Danny—precious time that spoke to the deep bond they shared. Bob also believed in service. As an active member of the Lions Club, His involvement reflected his quiet strength and dedication to community.
Bob is survived by Estela, his devoted wife of 50 years, his brother Walter Egger and a large, loving family:
His children: Stephen Egger (wife Carmela), the late Daniel Egger (wife Vicki), Deborah Morris (late husband John), Donna Talbott (husband Edward), Kathryn Hoxie (husband Hal), David Egger (wife Peggy), Cynthia Muehlemann (husband Samuel), and Diane O’Riley (husband Brian). His stepchildren, Robert McDowell and Jennifer Duncan (husband David).
Bob’s legacy continues through his 28 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. He will also be remembered by Ann Peavey, the mother of his children.
As we gather to celebrate his life, let us honor not just the years he lived, but how he lived them: with integrity, adventure, deep faith, and a heart full of joy.
