Roger Gordon Lowney
June 7, 1935 – April 7, 2019
Dr. Roger Gordon Lowney, born June 7, 1935, in Superior, Wisconsin, peacefully passed away the evening of April 7, 2019, at the age of 83, in his home in San Diego, California. Roger was the son of Raymond Lowney and Esther (Alexson Lowney) Ammesmaki and the second oldest of five surviving siblings, Donna Watrous, Darlene Swanson, Richard Lowney, Shari Johnson and Jeffrey Lowney. Roger grew up in Wisconsin and attended Stout State University and the University of Wisconsin, Superior, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1959. His competitive spirit led him to become a skillful basketball player who was inducted into the UW Superior Yellowjackets Hall of Fame. Roger believed in the power of education and achieved a master’s degree in Education and two Doctorates of Philosophy. He gave back to the communities where he lived by working as Superintendent for Public School Districts in the states of Wisconsin, Washington and California. Eventually he called San Diego home, enjoying spectacular beaches and great weather year-round. Yet in spite of Roger’s ambitions within the education community, he was a family man raising five children, Darcy Berg, Michael Lowney, Scott Lowney, Dana Allen and Damon Lowney. He is survived by all of his children, seven grandchildren, John Degurski, Briana Alexander, Jessica Barrett, Adam Lowney, Kristina Lowney, Cameron Lowney and Kyle Lowney, and three great grandchildren. For nearly his entire life, Roger exercised daily, in the rain, snow, or shine, sick or healthy, which included a 2-3-mile neighborhood run. He was also an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers and Wisconsin Badgers. A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held at an undecided time and location in Superior, Wisconsin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Democratic party (https://my.democrats.org/page/contribute/donate-to-help-democrats-today); UW Superior (https://www.uwsuper.edu/give2uws/forms/donation.cfm); and/or the Wisconsin Badgers (https://supportthebadgers.athletics.wisc.edu/). Please make donations in memory of Roger G. Lowney.

So sorry to hear of your father's passing. I never knew him, but in researching my book I enjoyed reading about his basketball exploits. He helped lead Superior East to that school's final sectional championship and final trip to the state tournament where he performed so well that he was named to the All-Tournament team. East was considered to be just the third-best team in Superior for much of the year, but they proved the naysayers wrong at tournament time.

During his last years, Roger provided constant support for the many political emails of mine which were published in our local newspapers. He knew a great deal about Politics, as well as many other things, and we were happy that he agreed with and supported our views. He was also constantly supportive of Shari and I, whenever we needed help or moral support. Roger was also was the only member of his family to earn a PHD--something he rightly felt very proud of accomplishing, as well as his skills as a basketball player.
About two weeks before he died, we received a letter from him containing very happy and loving feelings which he wanted to express to his family and children--whom he viewed as the best family and children that he could ever have had!
He was quite a guy and we'll miss him forever!
With love, Pete and shari
