Bill was born in Merced, CA, on January 13, 1951, to Raymond and Jo Kessler. His formative years were spent in the sunny coastal town of Oceanside, CA, where his passions for surfing and music first took root and flourished. From his days at Oceanside High School and well into adulthood, Bill's love for music was a constant thread in his life. He especially enjoyed playing music with his best friend Greg Hall. The two shared a special bond filled with laughter, good times, and of course great music. He graced numerous stages with his talent, most notably touring as an opening act for the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis and Bo Diddley – a testament to his musical prowess.
His adventurous spirit then led him to the majestic landscapes of Mammoth, CA. There, he embraced the thrill of cross-country skiing and riding horses by day and continued to share his musical gifts by night, entertaining enthusiastic crowds with his band, Kessler and Wickersham, at the local establishment, the Rafters.
Bill’s musical soul resonated with the sounds of the Beach Boys, the Grateful Dead, and the Beatles, among others. He was a gifted songwriter, and his original compositions, including the cherished family favorite “Chasing Wild Horses,” will continue to live on in our hearts.
When music stopped paying the bills, Bill started a career at Beacon Electric Supply as a lighting quotation manager. He bid on lots of large projects around the San Diego area including Qualcomm Stadium and the San Diego Zoo. Bill met lifelong friends at the small family-owned electrical supply company, including dear friend Everett Taylor.
Above all else, Bill treasured his role as a father to his two sons, William Kessler Jr. and Daniel Kessler. He was their unwavering supporter, whether coaching them in Little League baseball or cheering them on from the sidelines. The three shared many cherished moments camping, golfing with their Papa Ray, and creating lasting memories during family gatherings. Their epic trip to Kauai during the boys' teenage years was a frequent and fond topic of conversation.
Bill is lovingly remembered by his sons, William Kessler Jr. and Daniel Kessler; his older brother, Raymond Kessler; his younger sister, Colleen Kessler; and his nieces, Tanya and Meggan Kessler. His warm presence, his infectious love for music, and his devotion to his family will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A private celebration of Bill’s life will be held by his family.
