Mrs. Mattox was born November 2, 1917 in Grantville, GA. She graduated from North Fulton High School in Atlanta, GA and attended GSCW in Milledgeville. She married the late Kendrick Ware Mattox in 1935.
Mrs. Mattox has been very active in her community. She was a member of the First Baptist Church on the Square, The Plumbago Garden Club, served on the board of the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the Guild. Mrs. Mattox created the Mattox-Zachry Music Scholarship at LaGrange College. She was the Chairman of the Board of Gas Inc. of LaGrange. Her proudest accomplishment was the restoration of the Arnold-Mattox house which she moved from Grantville to LaGrange in 1967. She will leave this world a more beautiful place.
Mrs. Mattox is preceded in death by her husband, Kendrick Ware Mattox and son, Zachry Mattox.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Kendrick and Polly Mattox of LaGrange; daughter and son-in-law, Janey M. and John Sterchi of Knoxville, TN; daughter-in-law, Deeonn Mattox of LaGrange; grandchildren, Kendrick and Lacy Mattox of Charlotte, NC, Helen and William Bost of Atlanta, GA, Beth and Rob Cantiell of Knoxville, TN, Mathew and Julie Sterchi of Knoxville, TN, and Zachry and Annie Mattox of LaGrange; and 12 great grandchildren.
The family would like to send a special thanks to her devoted caregivers, Florence Raglin, Francina Nelson, Kia Crisp, Brenda Hampson, Sucy Rogers, and Hospice LaGrange.
The family will host a private service.
The gathering of family and friends will be on Thursday, April 5, 2012 from 1:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. at the home of Mrs. Betty Mattox, 635 Country Club Road.
