Born in Haleyville, Alabama, Betty lived a life marked by faith, service, kindness, and a continual desire to learn.
Betty was the devoted wife of Rev. Ruben “Buddy” Speakman, faithfully supporting his ministry and serving alongside him in every church they called home. She worked in the business offices of Kaiser Permanente, UAB Hospital and Bibb Medical Center, where her professionalism and steady presence were evident to co-workers and friends.
A dedicated Sunday School teacher and lifelong church member, Betty’s faith guided her steps. She shared her gifts generously—through teaching and hospitality that touched many lives.
Betty loved to travel, bake, sew, craft, and quilt, and she delighted in the challenge of learning new skills at any age. Her hands were rarely still, and what she created brought joy to others.
She is survived by her children, Annette Hodges (Manley) and Dr. Todd Speakman (Katie); her grandchildren Kristin Lightsey, Alan Harris, Ryan Speakman (Sepidah), Austin Speakman, and Matt Speakman; and her great-grandchildren Jace Lightsey, Jaxon Lightsey, Jasper Lightsey, and Laila Speakman, and her sister Arlene Beck. Her family will forever treasure her strength and unwavering faith.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. A graveside service at Langdale Cemetery in Valley, Alabama will be held on Friday, November 28th at 1 pm.
All arrangements are made by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 1010 Mooty Bridge Road, LaGrange, GA 30240 (706) 884-8636.
