COL (Retired) Shepperd H. Phillips, Jr.

Mr. Phillips was born November 1, 1930 in Troup County, GA, to the late Shepperd H. Phillips, Sr. and Susie Louise Whitaker Oglesby. He proudly served his country and retired from the United States Army after 24 years of service. “Shep” as he was affectionately known, began in 1975, his second career of 41 years with Equitable Insurance. He was dedicated to the service of others. Mr. Phillips was Past President of Rotary of LaGrange, a member of the VFW, an active member and past president of the Military Officers Association of America and was an Elder of Dallas-Dodd Presbyterian Church. He was well respected and will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Arnold Phillips; a sister, Annice Phillips Brazell; and son, SSG (Retired) Shepperd H. Phillips, III.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Betty Cummings Phillips; son, W. Bart (Ellen) Phillips; daughters, Emily Phillips Johnson and Elizabeth “Betsy” Phillips (Jeff) Batts; daughter-in-law, Catherine E. Phillips; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The Gathering of Family and Friends will be Wednesday, October 26, 2016 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at the funeral home. The Funeral Service will be 11:00am Thursday, October 27, 2016 in the Chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with Rev. Meg Jackson-Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Shadowlawn Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dallas-Dodd Presbyterian Church, 1244 Wares Cross Road, LaGrange, GA 30240, in memory of COL (Retired) Shepperd Hardy Phillips, Jr.
