Born in Seoul, South Korea, on October 9, 1961, Fernando spent his early years in Japan, Germany, and Georgia. He was the beloved son of Sgt. Major Luis Gaspar Cavazos Jr. and the late Okyun Kim Copeland, and the devoted father of Brittney Dee Cavazos.
After moving to California, Fernando became a father to Brittney with Marcella Diloretto (now Burrough). Years later, he returned to Georgia to care for his mother following the death of her husband, Keith Copeland—an act that reflected his deep sense of loyalty and compassion.
A gifted chef by both trade and spirit, Fernando had a special way of bringing people together through food. Whether he was preparing a feast or sharing a quiet meal with family, he poured his heart into every dish. Cooking wasn’t just his profession—it was his love language.
His love for cooking was rivaled only by his faith. Fernando was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church on the Square in LaGrange, Georgia, where he found strength, community, and peace. He was a man of warmth, quiet devotion, and unwavering love for those around him.
Fernando enjoyed sports throughout his life. In his youth, he participated in baseball, football, swimming, and karate. In high school, he continued to play football and began wrestling. As an adult, Fernando watched football, baseball, and sumo—sports that brought him joy and reminded him of his formative years abroad.
He is survived by his daughter, Brittney Dee Cavazos; his father, Sgt. Major Luis Gaspar Cavazos Jr.; his siblings, Ricky Cavazos, Rolando Cavazos, and Sylvia Kim Cavazos; and many other loved ones whose lives were touched by his kindness. He was preceded in death by his mother, Okyun Kim Copeland, and his grandmother, Esther Cavazos.
A small family service will be held in Fresno, California, to honor his life and memory.
Fernando will be remembered for his big heart, quiet strength, and the love he shared so generously.
