On Monday, November 10th, 2025, our lives changed forever when our beloved Heyward Horton, Jr. (“Pop”), 79, of LaGrange, GA, left this earth for his heavenly home. Heyward passed away in the early morning hours at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange. Although we miss him deeply, we rejoice in knowing he is in the arms of Jesus and completely healed.
Heyward was born on June 9th, 1946, in Savannah, GA, to the late Heyward Horton, Sr. and Florence (Borden) Horton.
Pop was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was quite the “charmer” to know him was truly to love him, he never met a stranger. His love language was service—he cared for everyone around him and gave generously and graciously. He loved the Lord and was an active member of First Baptist Church on the Square in LaGrange. Heyward was a career banker, spending more than 40 years doing what he loved. He spent the latter part of his career in the mortgage industry, working alongside his wife, Dee, at Statewide Mortgage, where he was cherished by coworkers and clients alike. He affectionately managed the “senior division” clients, offering patience, understanding, and a calming presence to all. Heyward also proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before beginning his banking career.
In retirement, Pop found great joy in the outdoors. He spent hours outside each day, and his yard looked like a “hole at Augusta National”. He took immense pride in keeping the lawn, pool, and home in pristine condition. He and his best friend, Pat Tyler, spent many happy days tackling home projects—usually doing them twice, with a smile. You could always find him in his hammock, relaxing at the end of day of “yard work” and projects.
He was an avid GA Dawgs fan, and love to coach the team from his living room recliner.
Pop loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He was the undisputed GRILL MASTER, known for cooking the best hamburgers and beef tenderloin in town.
He is survived by his loving wife and life partner of 21 years, Kimberly Dee Horton (“KD” to Pop). He was the best Bonus Dad to the Cook girls who became part of his life when he met Dee, and a loving Pop to all the grands who followed: Sarah Owens (Arkeus) and their daughters Charlotte and Caroline; Jill Cook (Dominque Smedley) and their children Evelynn, Hazel, and Ocean; Sydney Horne (Brannon) and their children Theo and Addie; and Dorothy Ramirez (Armando).
He is also survived by his wonderful adult children from a previous marriage: Lesley Horton, Heyward (Trey) Horton, III (Lori Beth), and their daughters Analeigh, Bethany, and Catherine.
A Praise and Worship Service celebrating Pop’s life will be held on December 9th at 3:00 pm at Prospect Church, 1431 Highway 34 W., Franklin, GA 30217.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to West Georgia Hospice, or to "Pop's Spot", a place that loved ones can come visit, and enjoy time with Pop. Contributions to "Pop's Spot" can be made via Venmo to @Allyson-Cook-4. Please reach out to Allyson at 706-957-3671 with any questions.
