John was born on April 19, 1947, in LaGrange to the late John and Miriam Holliday of Greenville, Georgia. John developed a sense of duty and leadership from a young age. He was older brother to three little sisters and showed his commitment to serve by earning the Eagle Award in scouting at the age of fourteen. A proud graduate of Greenville High School’s class of 1965, John went on to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology where he joined the brotherhood of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management in 1970.
He then returned home to raise a family and work for his family’s business, Holliday Construction Company in Greenville. He eventually became president of Holliday Construction Company after his father and uncle retired. While working in this industry, John served as a member of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC Georgia) where he was elected State president and named to their national Board of Directors. Additionally, he served his community as a member and president of the local chapter of Georgia Jaycees. After Holliday Construction Company closed, John worked as a Project Manager for Atlanta Grading and Utilities and then retired from American Home Shield. John traveled extensively and enjoyed walking outdoors. He was proud of the fact that he completed the Peachtree Road Race for twelve consecutive years beginning at age 62.
John was a dedicated and active member of LaGrange First United Methodist Church for his entire adult life. Through the years he served his church by singing in the choir, chairing the Building and Grounds Committee, participating in the Builders’ Sunday School class, and leading an usher team for fifteen years. Most recently, even as his health declined, John was a faithful servant who delivered Meals on Wheels, assisted in the soup kitchen, and worshipped faithfully throughout the week. He exemplified service and leadership in his Christian walk and encouraged his family to follow his example of dedication.
John is survived by his loving daughters, Jennifer (John) Gibbons and Julianne (Billy) Skipper; his grandchildren, Blade Kendall (fiancée Rose Chappell), Holliday Lynn, and Susannah Lynn; sisters, Janet Powell, Gay (Keith) Fortson, and Susan Lee; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Linda Maire.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John William Holliday, Sr. and Miriam Turner Holliday, and brother-in-law, Lewis Orr Powell III.
