John Carleton Hurd

Dr. Hurd was born November 24, 1947 in Oswego, NY, son of the late Carleton Homer Hurd and Jane Sheldon Hurd. He was a graduate of Auburn University with a Ph.D in Biology and a Master of Science and also a graduate of Montevallo College with a Bachelor of Science. Dr. Hurd was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and was retired from LaGrange College as a Biology Professor and Department Chair. He was President of Troup Trader’s Investment Group, past assistant Boy Scout Leader, and project leader for the Natural History of Birds of Troup County.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret O’Gwynn Hurd of LaGrange; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Sean Parker of Newnan, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Rachaele Hurd of LaGrange; grandsons, Jack Hurd and Ellis Parker; granddaughter, Audrey Hurd; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Ron Philen of Pensacola, FL; sisters-in-law, Jeanne O’Gwynn of Grayson, GA, Rebecca Sutter and her husband Wayne Sutter of Safety Harbor, FL; and brother-in-law, John O’Gwynn of Lawton, OK.

A Celebration of Life will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 26, 2011 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend Allen Pruitt and The Reverend Jane Dorman officiating.

The reception and visitation will immediately follow the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Mark’s Memorial Fund or Hospice LaGrange in memory of Dr. John C. Hurd.
