

Mr. Shelton was born September 1, 1930 in Cedartown, GA, son of the late John Douglas Shelton and Mae Roberts Shelton. He was a member of First Baptist Church on the Square where he served as a Deacon and Director of Senior Adults Sunday School Department since 1964. Mr. Shelton was employed with Southern Bell before retiring. He served as past president of the American Cancer Society and served on the Board of Directors for the Troup County Cattleman’s Association, Farm Bureau, and the Georgia Sheriff’s Pineland Campus. Mr. Shelton was a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Shelton Lawrence and Johnnie Shelton.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Hedrick Shelton; daughter, Connie Shelton Yates and her husband Donald F. Yates; grandchildren, Maggie Yates Sorrenti and her husband John Sorrenti, Joseph Donald Yates, and Caroline Shelton Yates; sister, Ruth Shelton Fincher; brothers, Lamar Shelton, Harold Shelton, Joel Shelton, and Ronnie Shelton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 23, 2012 at First Baptist Church on the Square with Dr. Paul Baxter and Reverend Paul Blair officiating. A private burial will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
The family will be at the home of his wife, Elsie Shelton, and will receive friends this evening from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to West Georgia Hospice, First Baptist Church on the Square, or the Georgia Sheriff’s Pineland Campus in memory of Mr. Lewis Shelton.
