
Mrs. Melton was born January 20, 1937 in Atlanta, daughter of the late Joseph Ambrus Thornton, Sr. and Virginia Garrison Thornton. She retired from the Department of Family and Children Services, where she worked as a Case Worker and Supervisor for many years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange.
Mrs. Melton was a member of the West Georgia Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary, LaGrange Shufflers, and The Rowdies. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. E. “Pete” Melton.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Elisabeth and Don Stubbs, Virginia and Ernie Williams, and Mary Junia and Chuck Britt; a granddaughter, Savannah Marie Britt; brothers, Joseph and Pat Thornton and Richard and Linda Thornton; sister, Mary Inez Thornton-Vogel, and her husband, Don; cousin, Patricia and Jeff Simmons; numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews; and a special companion, Buddy.
The family will gather at the funeral home to receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, September 24, 2012 at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange Chapel with Dr. Harold Lawrence officiating. Entombment will follow in Restlawn Memory Gardens.
Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to either the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or West Georgia Hospice in memory of Margaret T. Melton.
