Michael Eugene Burke

Michael "Mike" Burke was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose love for his family was the foundation of his life. He passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of strength, kindness, and unwavering love.

Mike was the beloved husband of Janie Burke. He was the loving father of Heather (Alex) Barajas and a proud stepfather to Joe Garvey, Jack and Jimmi Arnott. His greatest joy in life was being "grandpa" to his grandchildren, Riley, Daisy, Samuel, Skye, Daisy, Adrian, Leah Rose, Leo and Lucas, including Ezekiel. His grandchildren were his proudest accomplishment. He is also survived by his brother, Mark Burke; numerous nieces and nephews, including Carmen, Lee, Daphne, Valorie, Livvi, Matthew, Emily and Jodi; many great-nieces and great-nephews; cousins; and countless friends who became family.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Felton Eugene Burke; his mother, Dolores Ruth Burke; his paternal grandparents, Frankie Burke and Riley Burke; and his maternal grandparents, Ruth and Robert DeLeon.

A hardworking man, Mike dedicated 26 years of service to Milliken and later worked 15 years with NOK-Freudenberg before taking an early retirement due to illness. He was known as a quiet man until you got to know him. Once you did, you found someone who was a loyal friend, a true team player, and always willing to lend a helping hand to his coworkers, family, and friends. He worked hard, played hard, laughed easily, and truly lived life to the fullest.

Mike had a passion for the outdoors and loved hunting, fishing, woodsmanship, pyrotechnics, playing the guitar, singing, traveling, sitting around campfires, and spending time with friends. Above all else, he treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren.

In July 2024, Mike was diagnosed with Stage IV kidney cancer after it had already spread to multiple organs, with the liver being the most aggressively affected. Throughout his journey, he endured numerous treatments and their difficult side effects with remarkable strength and determination. Even during his illness, he remained focused on enjoying life and making cherished memories with his family, including one last deep-sea fishing trip from Panama City Beach. Later, doctors discovered he was also battling colon cancer, which had gone undetected until it was too late.

Mike wanted others to learn from his experience. His heartfelt message was simple: "Get your colonoscopy. It is worth it. Colon cancer is easily treated if it is found in time. Don't live for tomorrow—live for today."

A Celebration of Life honoring Mike will be held Monday, June 29, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. in the Mill Room at Striffler-Hamby Mortuary in LaGrange. Family and friends are invited to gather to share memories and celebrate a life well lived.

In keeping with Mike's wishes, memorial donations may be made, if desired. If a donation box is available at the service, Mike requested that contributions be divided equally between kidney cancer research and Wellstar Hospice in appreciation of the compassionate care they provided.

Mike will be remembered as a devoted family man who loved fiercely, gave generously, and made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
