Raymond A. Newman

Mr. Newman was born November 15, 1931 in Augusta, GA to the late William Harold Newman and Georgia Virginia Williams Newman. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church for the last 43 years, where he served on numerous boards and committees. Ray was a member and past President of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class, where he taught for many years. Mr. Newman showed his kind heart and loving spirit by serving as past President of United Methodist Men and volunteering with Meals on Wheels. He proudly served his country as a United States Marine in the Reserves and during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Newman was a member and past President of both the Rotary Club and Highland Country Club. He retired from Metropolitan Life Insurance after a successful 42 year career and continued as a consultant. He was a Chartered Life Underwriter and a member of the Life Underwriters Association.

Mr. Newman was a faithful participant of the West GA Health Heart Clinic exercise program since 1986. He was an avid golfer and the oldest member of the Elite 16 Golf Group.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of almost 60 years, Eugenia “Jean” Hiers Newman; daughters, Kathy (James) Owen and children, Daniel and David; Ginger (Keith) Schafer and children, Jay and Jeff; Jane Mahan and children, Jon, Scottie and Connor; Nancy (Jim) Frank and children, Matthew and Kelly; his siblings, Virginia (Wesley) Byrd, Jimmy (Effie) Newman, Rhind (Lee) Newman, Jerry (Twila) Newman and many other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Newman.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm Friday, February 20, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of LaGrange with Dr. Harold Lawrence and Blake Trent officiating. A gathering of family and friends will immediately follow in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First United Methodist Church of LaGrange, 401 Broad Street, LaGrange, GA 30240 in memory of Mr. Raymond A. Newman.
