"A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others." Mr. Carlisle lit the way for thousands of young men and women to navigate the trials and tribulations of life. What I remember most about him was his calmness and gentle presence and at the same time having the ability to take on the basketball players. It seems like yesterday we were walking the halls of Heard County High School with Mr. Carlisle there to keep order. It took a special kind of love to devote his life to being an educator, a bountiful love that was shared with all who were blessed to know him. A love so powerful that even death couldn't conquer it. God bless you Shea and Family, may you keep his love and light burning.

Mr. Carlisle was one of the kindest, most patient men I’ve ever known - a talented educator with the unique ability to command respect from every person he met, even the school troublemakers. He will be missed by everyone who had the good fortune to meet him. May God bless his sweet soul.

Richard was the type of man that gained everyone's respect: from the children, who knew him as Mr. Carlisle, my school principle and mentor; friends, neighbors in his hometown; and his beloved family. He showed not only by his words but his actions how very deeply he loved and cherished his beautiful wife, Becky. He adored his children and he wanted them to be successful in following their own path to a productive life. Most of all he wanted them to be happy, loved and cherished in the same manner that he cherished his Becky. Richard will be missed by so many people but most of all by his beloved family, extended family members, like me and all his dear friends.

I wish I could share in words what is in my heart for this man: "Coach Carlisle". He took a little country girl from Meriwether County under his wing in the 7th and 8th grades. While he taught her much about Science and basketball, he taught her more about life. He was a true "teacher". We were located in an old high school building and thus, there was a Chemistry Lab--so we did high school Chemistry experiments. There was a typing lab, so he taught us to type. We had a tennis court so he taught us to play tennis. Playing basketball for the first time in my life, I just could not get the coordination to come through for a lay-up shot. But Coach ran with me every step until I got it. And as a 62 year old woman, I can still do a lay-up today! This man loved me, taught me, kept up with me through the years, came to my wedding, and stayed in touch. He always had a smile, a joy, an outlook on life that was contagious. My regret is that I did not call him on his birthday this year. His is a life well lived--and only Jesus knows how many lives he touched and made better. I love you, Coach, and look forward to seeing you again. I just know I will have to stand in line to thank you in Heaven.
