Janie (Sandra Jane) Linkes Davis was born August 23, 1947 in Somerset, Kentucky to Howard and Ona Linkes. Her childhood was spent working at her family’s Tasty Freeze, playing with her brother and cousin, and eventually as a Jumperette at Somerset High School (go purple and gold!). A series of twists and turns in life landed Janie in Atlanta where she met her husband, Dock H. Davis. After marrying, Dock and Janie moved back to his family’s home in Franklin, Georgia where they raised their children Whitney, Joshua, Laurel, and Pallie.
Any children or teachers who walked through the doors at Heard County Schools from 1990-2007 knew Ms. Janie as the smiling face who loved each and every one of them. She worked alongside numerous principals as the school secretary and ended her career at Heard County Middle School alongside one of her good friends, Mr. Jerry Prince. She couldn’t walk into the Piggly Wiggly without seeing someone who remembered her as a welcoming spirit who loved with her whole heart.
Although Janie had many jobs in her lifetime, her absolute favorite titles were Mom and Spuddy. For 28 years, Janie spent countless hours on the road taking her kids to their various events and she loved every second of it. Having lost her own mother at the age of eleven, she never took a single moment for granted with her children. Car rides were spent listening to the oldies or NPR and talking through whatever was happening in their lives at the moment.
Once her kids were older and married, she eagerly anticipated her grandchildren, her Tater Tots. As a grandmother, she poured into her grandkids with love and attention in a way that will be with them forever. Janie, Ona, Emiline, Millie Jane, Gillie, Copeland, and Davis know the power of a Spuddy hug and never doubt for a moment that she will always be in their corner.
With grown children and growing grandchildren, Janie’s group of female friends became her touchpoint. Checking in on each other, playing cards, going on trips, listening to their worries and joys, and a never-quiet group text filled her life with so much joy and love in the way nothing other than female friends can.
Janie spent the last week of her life happy and healthy in her favorite place, the beach, with all of her kids and grandkids. Every night, as the sun set over the ocean, at Spud’s behest they all gathered on the porch of the beach house and said goodbye to the sun, thanking it for a beautiful day and reveling in the beauty of this world and life.
Now, they will all gather to say goodbye to their sun, thanking her for a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, good food, big hugs, and happy tears. No service is planned at this time but her children request that you celebrate her life by lifting up someone who is struggling, loving others without abandon, and appreciating the beautiful world around us.
Janie leaves behind a legacy of immense love, service, and laughter to Whitney; Josh, Ona, and Gillie; Laurel, Willie, Millie Jane, and Davis; Pallie, Andrew, Janie, Emiline, and Copeland; sister Wanda Moore; brother Mac (Linda) Linkes; cousin Rick (Ann) Leigh; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and very dear friends.
There are no services schedueld at this time.
