Billie Jean Manuel

On May 29, 2016, Billie Jean (Peters) Manuel, age 85, formerly of Lake Charles, Louisiana, became a new resident of heaven. A celebration of her life is scheduled for 11 am Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Visitation begins at 9:30 prior to the service. Interment will be at Consolata Cemetery.

Billie, the only child of Clarence and Gertrude (Coleman) Peters of Oakdale, Louisiana was born January 25, 1931. After high school she attended business school in Lake Charles then was employed by Calcasieu Marine Bank. Billie married Sanford Manuel of Elton, Louisiana on November 11, 1950. They became active members of First Baptist Church Lake Charles where they served faithfully and raised their children.

When all her children went to school, Billie returned to work at the same bank for 10 years followed by 10 years as a clerk at Calcasieu Parish School board.

Her active retirement included 1000 hour Pink Lady Volunteer, Optimist Wives Club, Pre-school Sunday School teacher and her favorite role of Grandma to 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was known for her gracious demeanor and gift of hospitality.

After the loss of her husband of 60 years Billie moved in 2012 to Brookdale Assisted living in Austin, Texas to be near her daughter.

She loved her Lord, her family, her church - but especially her husband.

Billie is survived by son Wayne Manuel and wife Claire of Slidell, Louisiana; daughter Debbie Manuel Hixson and her husband Milton of Austin, Texas; son Michael Manuel and his wife Melodie of Rowlett, Texas; and daughter Sandy Manuel Malcolm and her husband David, of North Carolina. Seven grandchildren: Les Hixson and his wife Ashley; Jana Hixson; Justin Hixson and his wife Laine; Aaron Malcolm and his wife Ashley; Jonathan Malcolm and his wife Nicole; Evan Malcolm and Mia Manuel. Two great grandchildren, Avery and Davis Hixson. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

The family expresses deep gratitude to the Brookdale/Clare Bridge staff for their compassionate care for Billie.
