Born on June 16, 1957, Debbie was a retired educator who also worked with the U.S. Census Bureau and in the finance departments of casinos. Throughout her life, she embraced each day with an exhilarating zest for life, finding beauty, joy, and wonder in the world around her.
Debbie had a deep appreciation for nature and the tranquility it offered. Majestic oceans, babbling brooks, and gentle streams provided her with a sense of serenity and peace. An avid reader with an insatiable curiosity, she also enjoyed fishing, crabbing, playing Scrabble, and feeding the birds. Her beloved dogs held a particularly special place in her heart, serving as her constant companions and bringing immeasurable happiness to her days. They truly were the heartbeat at her feet.
Music and faith were also meaningful parts of Debbie’s life. A devoted member of the United Methodist Church, she found great joy in singing beautiful hymns and listening to the magnificent sounds of the Schulmerich handbells. She often described the five-octave handbell choir as producing the “sounds of angels.” Her faith remained a source of comfort and inspiration throughout her life.
Debbie is survived by her brother, Trey Skinner; and her cherished best friend and confidante, Connie Leger. Connie was an integral part of Debbie’s life, sharing countless joys, sorrows, adventures, and treasured memories. Their friendship was a beautiful testament to love, loyalty, and companionship.
Debbie was preceded in death by her beloved mother, June; her father, J.C.; her twin sister, Robbie; her brother, Jimmy; and her former husband, Gene.
Debbie’s joyful spirit, love of nature, devotion to her animals, and appreciation for life’s simplest pleasures will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
As Debbie once expressed, “To all of you—live, laugh, love. I will be doing this in Heaven. Connie can be my master gardener!”
Now reunited with her Lord and those who have gone before her, may Debbie delight in the beauty and peace of her heavenly home, surrounded by the glorious sounds of angels.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Calcasieu Parish Animal Shelter or to the music ministry of St. Luke-Simpson United Methodist Church, in honor of Debbie’s love for animals, music, and her faith.
Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Hixson Funeral Home, and her cremated remains will be entrusted to her family.
