

Dorothy Mae Moses McFatter, 92, of Lake Charles, was married to William Warren “Bill” McFatter for 59 years. She was born on January 14, 1926 in DeRidder, LA to her late parents, Ottis and Alda Moses.
She graduated from Northwestern State College and from LSU with a Master’s Degree in Library Science. She moved to Lake Charles in 1948 when she married William Warren McFatter. She worked her entire career of 30+ years for Calcasieu Parish School Board as the head librarian of LaGrange Senior High School. There she sponsored the Rodeo Club as well as the Library Club. Dorothy was a charter member of Alpha Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society of Key Women Educators serving in many positions including president. After retiring from the school system, she went to work for the Imperial Calcasieu Planning Commission to organize their library.
After retirement, tapestry rug hooking became her passion. She spent many years creating beautiful rugs, pillows, and wall hangings and traveling to many states taking classes in the Arts. She also shared her knowledge of her craft, teaching others.
She was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Lake Charles where she taught Adult Sunday School classes and worked in the library there. She also worked many years alongside her husband in the seamen’s ministry of Carey Baptist Association filling Christmas stockings that were distributed to foreign seamen at the Port of Lake Charles Seafarers’ Center. Dorothy traveled to the Holy Land on two occasions and to Ireland, Scotland and England.
She is survived by her three children, Elaine Cooper (Joe) of Lake Charles, Warren McFatter (Yana) of Houston, TX, Brent McFatter (fiancee’ Wendy Rogers) of DeQuincy; 6 grandchildren, Loren Cooper of Tomball, TX, Laura Cooper Pastorek (Jordan) of Frisco, TX, Derek Cooper of Lake Charles, Kellie Cooper Smith (Eric) of Lake Charles, Robin McFatter Haney (Mike) of McKinney, TX, Valerie McFatter of Houston, TX; 9 great grandchildren, Avery Cooper, Lenora Cooper, Jack Pastorek, Lindsay Pastorek, Laci Pastorek, Brianna Haney, Cassidy Haney, Cooper Smith, Parker Smith; one brother, Carroll Moses, (Loretta) of Bellville, TX; step-sister, Pat Moses Howard, (Ken) of Lake Charles; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” McFatter; one sister, Betty Lou Moses Pyle, (Alvis) of Niceville, Florida.
Services will be held at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at 11:00am. Visitation will be on Wednesday at the funeral home from 9:00am until the time of the service. A private committal will be held at McFatter Cemetery in DeQuincy at a later time.
