Edna Stelly Brittain, age 97 of Lake Charles, LA, passed away peacefully in her home on March 19, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.
Edna was born on May 14, 1920 in Meaux, Louisiana, to Edias Stelly and Nita Thibeaux Stelly Vincent. She moved to Shreveport where she worked as a nurse at the Shreveport Charity Hospital. Nursing was her passion in life. She married her beloved husband, John Brittain, on December 13, 1941, a marriage which lasted until she was widowed 45 years later. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. When she was not caring for her family and home, she could be found working in her flower gardens and volunteering her services. Edna volunteered at St. Margaret Catholic Church teaching Catechism to school aged children and adults. She also taught adults to teach Catechism. For several years, she provided service to the Lord as a Eucharistic Minister, and helped with seasonal decorations in the church. She was a member of Catholic Daughters. Edna also spent several years teaching swimming lessons and leading exercise classes at the YMCA. She volunteered in the Flower Shop at St. Patrick Hospital for over 33 years, where she made floral arrangements for the gift shop to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network. She retired from volunteering at the age of 92.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Brittain, her parents, and brother, Gladstone Stelly.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Charles “Larry” Brittain and wife, Doreen, Cerise “Cherry” Brittain Duran and husband, Jim, and Adrian Brittain and wife, Fleda all of Lake Charles; six grandchildren, Charlie Brittain, Pamela Long, Debbie Brittain, Lisa Walker and husband, Eric, Lori Beard and husband, Damon, and Jarid Duran; brothers, Clifford Stelly and wife, Clo, and Floyd Stelly and wife, Ruth; eleven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation services will be held 4--8 p.m. Thursday at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles with a rosary held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume 10:30 -11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12 p.m. Friday, March 23, 2018, at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Lake Charles. The Reverend Vijaya Prakash Peddoju, HGN will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
