Gwendolyn Bailey Spalding

Gwendolyn Bailey Spalding, 91, of Lake Charles passed away peacefully August 13, 2016 at a local hospital. She was born in Enid, OK in 1925 to the late George and Irene Bailey. In 1940, while attending St Charles Academy, she met the love of her life, Herman Spalding, and three years later while he was on leave, they married.

Gwen had a gentle and caring nature and devoted her time to raising her daughter and guiding other children as the Campfire Leader for many years. She taught Sunday School and always welcomed friends into her home and at her table. She was an excellent cook and many of the vegetables on her table came from her garden. Gwen was an active member of University United Methodist Church for many years. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Gwen is predeceased by her loving husband of 67 years, Herman, and her brother; DeWayne Orlo Bailey. She is survived by her daughter; Keitha Fruge and husband Clair, Grandchildren; James (Danielle) Fruge and Michael Fruge, great grandchildren; Sage Michael, Millie and Mason, and many nieces and nephews as well as many friends.

Family will receive friends Tuesday, August 16, 2016 from 6-8:00 pm and resuming Wednesday at 10:00 am until Funeral Service at 11:00 at Hixson Funeral Home, 3001 Ryan St., Lake Charles.
