Jack was a long-time resident of Lake Charles where he graduated from LaGrange High School in 1959. He overcame many adversities in his life, most notably contracting polio at 4 years old. He triumphed over the handicaps it left him with. He then put himself through McNeese State University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy in 1963. It was here that he met his wife on a blind date. While in college, he worked for the Gulf Coast Soil and Water Conservation District.
Jack enjoyed traveling to locations featured in his favorite western movies. His great charisma entertained his friends and family alike, with a personality bigger than life. He was an outdoorsman and conservationist, traveling to Alaska to fish and sightsee with his wife. Jack talked often of his time trapping alligators, remembering it as a great adventure he shared with his cousin Budgie Precht. His lengthy 50 year career was spent at Walker Louisiana Properties and Prairie Land Company, where he served as a land manager (and later, consultant). He was instrumental in introducing sugar cane farming to the lake area. Jack was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church where he served proudly under pastors Carter Rogers, John Bosman, Carl Richard, Steve Perry, and Paul Burke.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 62 years, Wilda Penny Chelette; daughter, Carol Chaney; grandchildren, Hannah Chaney and Duke Douglas Trujillo; sister, Donna Todd; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jeneral Cleveland Chelette, Sr. and Arlo Precht Chelette.
