Karen "Troll" Sue Perkins

She was the third of five children born to Othel Ray and Helen Empress Griffith. Learning early in life that she was not easily defeated, she survived a serious bout of measles, an experience that molded her strength and resilience throughout her life.

South Bend, Indiana, was her home, graduating from LaSalle High School. She met the man who would become her husband, Lee through his younger sister, Jody. Their story had a few twists and turns before they married, her trademark determination took her to California to chase her dreams. Lee knew none of his fun-loving shenanigans’ had meaning without his true love, so he followed, exchanging vows January 23, 1972.

Together they welcomed two daughters, Stacey & Nikki. As Lee’s service in the United States Marine Corps took them all over the world, Mama Kay did what she did best. She was a devoted wife and mother, no matter the duty station, her gung-ho attitude instilled strong values and self-worth into them while also maintaining the home and various business endeavors. Including owning/operating Gerald’s Market while in Newport, NC.

Although normally quiet in nature, she loved coming to life with a mic in her hand, singing karaoke with joy and confidence that made every occasion a little more fun. Although her voice was impeccable, it was never about hitting every note, but having a good time and making memories with the people she loved.

Retirement brought them to Lake Charles, where they immersed themselves in the community, purchasing and running the Lake Charles Gun Club, spending many seasons working at Spirit Halloween, joining the Combat Veterans Association and hitting the road on their motorcycles, or supporting various veteran groups. She kept her girls on their toes, as she was their original Shenanigans leader, including but not limited to an impromptu trip at age 60 for her first tattoo; a unicorn adorning the colors of American pride. Lee loved life with her, always keeping the surprises coming. Even purchasing a 1969 Dodge Super Bee on a whim last summer, a great surprise with a more epic burnout.

Through Kay’s story, her greatest wealth was never measured in possessions, but in people, leading by example in one of life’s most beautiful lessons: accept people as they are and love them where they stand. Her doors were always open, and there was always room for one more at her table, in her home, and in her heart. She had a way of making people feel welcome, accepted, and like they belonged.

Above all, her grandchildren filled her heart and gave her a richness money could never buy. Their laughter was her favorite sound, their happiness her greatest joy, and the memories they made together were treasures she held closest.

On October 2, 2026 at the age of seventy-three she was welcomed into Heaven by her parents and oldest brother, Bobby Griffith. As Halloween was her favorite season, we would bet she waited for him to exit the gates to get in a long overdue surprise scare.

Those left to cherish her memory include: her husband of fifty-four years, Lee R. Perkins; two daughters, Stacey L. Clement (Joe) and Nikki D. Perkins (Ron); grandchildren: Andrew (Monica) Zeece, Ramzey L. (Allyn) Neas, Rozlyn R. Neas; great-grandchildren: Isabella & Ellie Mae and one on the way; two sisters, Shirley Schooler and Belinda Vermilyer; one brother, Terry Griffith; nieces, nephews and extended family. We dare not forget her grandpups-Pickles & Cherry!

As she considered us all family, visitation will be held at J. E. Hixson & Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 6, 2026 beginning at 10am with a celebration of her life beginning at 2pm led by Pastor Brent Keating.

In lieu of flowers, family ask that donations be made to Houston Methodist MDA/ALSA ALS Clinic.

A heartfelt thank you to all the nurses and doctors of Harbor Hospice Home Health Care & Harbor Hospice Inpatient Care.
