Loston Lee Joseph McEvers

He was born in Grand Chenier, LA. on November 21, 1938, to Rufus and Evyone McEvers.

He attended and graduated from Grand Chenier High in 1956, where he excelled at playing football, baseball, basketball, and running track. He was also a member of the annual staff and was President of the school newspaper. Following high school, he attended McComb Mississippi Jr. College to play football and later transferred to Sowela Technical Community College where he graduated with degrees in gas & diesel mechanics and welding.

He served his country for 2 years in the US Army along and another 2 years in the US Army Reserve.

Loston resided in Creole most of his life until moving to Sweet Lake following the destruction of Hurricane Rita. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Creole, LA, until Hurricane Rita where he became a member of St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church (Big Lake). Loston belonged to the American Legion for 30 plus years, Knights of Columbus Council 3014 (Creole) served as District Deputy for 2 years, St. Margaret Catholic Church Council 3208 he served as 3rd Degree and 4th Degree Assembly 320, 16 years Lower Cameron Parish Ambulance Board, 8 years on the Cameron Parish School Board in which 3 years were served as President. He was also a member of Ducks Unlimited, Louisiana Writers Association, Toledo Bend Lake Association, Trout Unlimited Association, and he wrote for the Cameron Pilot and DeQuincy News since 1974. He was also a past member of the LeMeche Bass Club which he helped start in 1972.

He worked for Rockefeller Refuge, Crain Brothers, Inc., Sowela at Cameron Vo Tech where he taught mechanics, and in 1969 he opened Loston’s Auto Parts, followed by Rudy’s Fisherman Stop in 1981unitl his retirement in 2001.

Loston was a hard worker,(a trait that he passed on to his children), a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. He had many hobbies and passions, which included his love for the outdoors, cooking, fishing, hunting, gardening, telling jokes, sharing his life experiences, and his fishing tales with everyone (especially with the grandchildren). He passed on his love of fishing to his son (who loved to fish just as much as his dad) and to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also loved playing his guitar and singing his old favorite songs, and that love could be heard through his bands: Loston & Loafers, Loston’s Country Cajuns, and Swamp Country.

He won several writing awards from the Louisiana Press Association and the Associated Press for his columns in the Cameron Pilot and DeQuincy News, numerous bass club tournaments, and participated in many weigh-ins at Grand Chenier Park.

He was welcomed into Heaven with open arms by his loving wife, son, parents, and in-laws.

Those left to mourn, honor, and cherish his memory are his loving daughter, Jocelyn (Travis) Broussard; grandchildren, Erica (Tommy) Richard, Alex Broussard, and Rudy and Joey McEvers; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Kylie, Blake, Olivia, Lawston, Locke, Cameron, and Maggie; sisters, brothers-in-law, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You to Dr. Turner and Anna Landry, NP, Dr. Luke Williams and Aime NP, and Dr. Christian Leblanc; The 4th-floor nurses from Christus Ochsner St. Patrick Hospital, and Harbor Hospice nurses and staff.

The biggest thanks of all to Loston's amazing and loving caregivers, Trudy, Patricia, Beverly, Janice, and Betty; whom he loved very much.

The family would like to invite relatives and friends to Hixson Funeral Home's Chapel of Peace on Friday, January 24, 2025, beginning at 4 pm until 8 pm for visitation, with a rosary recited at 6 pm.

Visitation will resume on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 8 am until the time of dismissal at 9:45 am to go in procession to St. Mary's of the Lake in Grandlake, LA. Father Gaddy will lead services.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held following the funeral mass at Grandlake/Sweetlake cemetery.
