Maury was born January 16, 1927 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Sol and Lottie Riff. He grew up in Lake Charles, Louisiana. After serving in the U.S. Navy in World World II and attaining a diverse education in business, Maury joined the family-owned ladies' apparel store Riff's. Maury took over the business started by his parents in 1928 and made it the place to shop for every woman in Southwest Louisiana. He married Shirley Gordon and raised their three children Linda, Nancy and Todd.
Maury was very active in his community serving as President of Temple Sinai, member of Krewe of Contraband, active in Shriners and on the board of the Lake Charles Country Club and YMCA. Maury volunteered for SCORE and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He was an avid golfer, skier, loved playing poker, was a huge supporter of McNeese State University, but above all, his family was his most important achievement.
Maury started the second chapter of his life in 1986 when he married Barbara Weinberg of Atlanta, Georgia. After retiring from Riff's, Maury and Barbara moved to Atlanta where they lived the next 17 years. Retirement didn't slow Maury down as he continued volunteering at SCORE, where he mentored young business entrepreneurs and took up bridge. Maury and Barbara loved to travel and visited over a dozen countries.
Maury was preceded in death by his parents Sol and Lottie Riff, his brother, Lloyd “Sonny” Riff and his grandson, Tyler Riff Ferguson.
