Jo was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana on January 2, 1930. She was the daughter of Lucille and John Mancuso. She graduated in 1946 from St. Charles Academy. She also attended McNeese State, and worked for Gulf Oil. In 1951 she married her husband of 47 years, Robert Self.
Robert and Jo had two children, Robert Kent Self and Tammy Self Garbarino. After the birth of both children Jo decided to volunteer at St. Margaret’s Catholic School. The position became full time, and she diligently occupied the role of Secretary and Administrative Assistant for over 40 years. During that time she received the Bishops Devoted Service Award (1990). In addition, briefly after her retirement the St. Margaret’s School library was named in her honor.
Jo was a loving woman who dedicated herself to her family, and her many friends. She was also a devout catholic who allowed her faith guide her. She was a member of St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, and was devoted to the blessed Mother Mary.
Jo is preceded in her death by her sister Theresa Willett, as well as her husband and son.
She is also survived by her daughter Tammy Garbarino and her husband E.N., her grandchildren Stuart Self and his wife Kevyn, Amy Garbarino Scalisi and husband Chris, and two great grandchildren, Brian Nicholas Snider and Addison Jo Scalisi. She is also survived by her brother in law John Mark Self, and her nephew Michael Willett and wife Ginger, as well as her niece Debbie Willett Hall, and numerous great nephews and nieces.
The family also wants to thank her angels and caregivers Claire Price, Martha Simmons, Nettie Elliott, and Brenda Savko.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from the hours of 4-6pm at Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10am Monday, September 10, 2018 at St. Margaret Catholic Church. Msgr. Harry Greig will officiate. Inurnment will follow at Consolata Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Margaret Catholic School Turst Fund or the Jo Self Library, St. Margaret School, St. Jude Childrens Hospital or the charity of choice.
