Carolyn Newlin, 85, of Lake Charles, passed away October 30, 2023, with her family and friends by her side; both were Lake Charles natives.
They met at Lake Charles High School 71 years ago and never left each other's side. They worked at Albert K. Newlin, Inc. for over 40 years, supplying air conditioning, heating, and electrical services to residential and commercial clients. William graduated from McNeese State University with a B.S. in electrical engineering. Carolyn also attended McNeese, where she learned accounting and became the company's comptroller.
They married on October 3, 1959, and they lived together in Lake Charles all of their lives. They are survived by one daughter, Julye Newlin, of Houston, TX.
Carolyn was an accomplished model, ballet dancer, avid tennis player, and incredible huntress, bagging over 150 animals in her lifetime. While attending McNeese, she was a member of Phi Mu Fraternity, while William was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. William was an athlete, playing football and basketball and participating in jogging and weight lifting. In addition, he was one of the most prolific hunters in the area. He began shooting on the wing when he was seven, fishing at five, and later traveling the world with his wife to take more than 400 animals. They loved spending all their leisure time together; they were true life partners.
Both were life members of Safari Club International and loved attending conventions at the Houston and Dallas Safari Clubs. Recently, Willam was inducted into the Shikar-Safari Club International, a high honor for any hunter, as induction is by invitation only. Carolyn was due for induction, but alas, her departure has prevented that possibility.
William served in the Army until the early 60s. A First Lieutenant in the transportation corp, he used his spare time to achieve expert marksmanship with any weapon the military had. Neither knew that life would take them to six of the world's seven continents.
The viewing ceremony will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023, from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. and again before the service on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace. Celebrant, Jody Barrilleaux will lead services.
People can make donations to the Houston Safari Club Foundation-Dan L Duncan Scholarship Fund at https://hscf.memberclicks.net/DLDScholarship. This educational scholarship assists scholars who wish to ensure the future of hunter's rights and wildlife conservation for decades.
