Gary was the son of Gary Lee McDiarmid and Judy Kay McDiarmid. He is survived by his two sons, Hale Millner of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and Hunter McDiarmid of Pikeville, North Carolina; his sister and brother-in-law, Ida and Wayne Neitzke of Lake Odessa, Michigan; and his bonus siblings; Tim Dale and his wife Melissa of Hastings Michigan and Shelly and her husband Mark Herbelet of Rockford Michigan.
Gary graduated from Lakewood High School in 1984, where he played baseball and made many lasting memories. He was a die-hard Michigan fan who loved learning the stats and history of U of M football.
Fishing was at the heart of Gary's life, especially his love for steelhead. More than the catch itself, he treasured the peace of the water, the beauty of nature, time with family and friends, and most of all, the brotherhood of fishermen. His passion extended beyond fishing to wildlife and the preservation of steelhead and their future populations. Through his involvement with the Barry County Anglers, Gary worked to protect the rivers, lakes, fish, and wildlife he loved so future generations could enjoy them too.
Though Gary has now cast his final line, his love for the outdoors, fishing, and those who shared his adventures will live on. May the rivers run clear, the steelhead continue to thrive, and his memory remain a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
Until we meet again, Gary—tight lines and good fishing. Go Blue!
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
The Celebration of Life will be held at The Hughe House (7766 Velte Rd Lake Odessa MI 48849) on October 17, 2026, from 2-5pm
