Born on October 7, 1939, in Ionia, MI, he was the son of the late Calvin and Stella Smith. Raised as the son of farmers, he learned the value of hard work early on. That strong work ethic stayed with him throughout his career, earning him the respect of his colleagues.
The true cornerstone of his life, however, was his family. He was the deeply devoted husband of Dorene, with whom he shared 65 beautiful years of marriage filled with laughter, deep partnership, and unwavering love. Together, they built a life centered on family, a legacy that will carry on through his children and grandchildren.
An outdoorsman at heart, Tom found his peace in nature. Whether he was out hunting, spending a quiet day fishing with his family, or spending hours meticulously tending to his lawn, he took immense pride in working with his hands and enjoying the quiet beauty of the outdoors. His yard was a testament to his patience, hard work, and care.
But of all the titles he held, perhaps his favorite was "Grandpa." He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan, a constant and proud fixture on the sidelines of every sports game, tournament, and meet. No matter the weather or the distance, he was always there, making sure they knew he was in their corner. The memories of his presence in those stands—and his enduring impact on their lives—will be deeply cherished and missed.
Tom was preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth Smith, Carlton Smith, Roger Smith, and Calvin Smith Jr.; his sisters, Marilyn Smith, Della Kulak, Beverly Townsend, Elaine Smith, and Donna Green; and his son-in-law, Dennis Richardson and nephew Eric DeGroote.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorene; his children, Annette (Jim) Savage, Rich (Molly) Smith, and Mike (Becky) Smith; his cherished grandchildren, Matthew (Melissa), Jordan (Beth), Micah, Hannah (Brandon), Joe (Hannah), Isaac (Katy), Madison (Chase), and Elijah; and his great-grandchildren, Lorelei, Luke, Dawson, Tyler, Blaine, and Maureen. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Ray) Dykhouse, sister in law Alice Smith, sister in law Darlene (Ernie) DeGroote, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is being planned for Monday, June 29, 2026 at Clarksville Bible Church starting at 10am with memorial services will begin at 11am with Tom being laid to rest in Clarksville Cemetery after the services. Luncheon to follow the burial back at the Church.
