Vernon Dean Makley

Over the years, Vernon built a life marked by steady effort and quiet devotion—someone many came to rely on, and many came to love. In the ways that mattered most, Vernon gave freely of time and help, meeting others with a calm patience and a generous spirit.

Vernon married Vivian Ackley on June 6th, 1954, and together they spent 67 years raising children and working side by side. Their long partnership stood as a testament to enduring commitment, shared purpose, and the kind of daily hard work that builds a family’s foundation.

Vernon held many jobs through the years, but most will remember the small engine work done from home through “Vern’s Repair.” Later, when Rick joined the business, they expanded and moved to Woodbury—continuing a tradition of honest work and dependable service that reflected Vernon’s lifelong diligence.

Outside of work, Vernon was an avid hunter and fisherman, finding satisfaction in time spent outdoors and in the simple, steady pleasures of those pursuits.

Vernon will be dearly missed by children Dan (Rochelle) Makley, Rick (Patty) Makley, and Tammy (Steve) Allerding; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister Melva Shook; and many nieces and nephews.

Vernon was preceded in death by parents Guy and Genevieve Makley; wife Vivian; brother-in-law Marvin Ackley; brother Russell Makley; and grandson Michael Makley.

Services for Vern will be a private family affair, but the family will welcome friends to join them at Venue 123, 1230 N. Michigan Ave, Hastings MI 49058 on September 15th, 2026 12:30pm until 2pm,
