Blossom Elaine Beckles

Blossom Elaine Beckles, 93, was born on September 8, 1932, in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and passed away on August 31, 2026. She lived her life with steady dignity and a deep, abiding faith—meeting each season with courage, patience, and a generosity that made others feel seen, safe, and cared for. She was, in every sense, beloved and cherished, and her absence will be felt profoundly by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In her early years, Blossom Elaine Edwards was born to Ruth Gray and Sam Lou. Her parents never married, as Sam, a Chinese man, was already married to another woman in China. Because Ruth did not agree with Chinese culture, Blossom did not meet her father until she was five years old. When he became sick, her uncle took her to see him before he died—an encounter Blossom would describe, many times over the years, as a precious gift. What may have seemed small to others was monumental to her: hearing her father say he had always loved her. Though she lost her dad, she gained another family. Her Chinese family owned a restaurant in Spanish Town, and her stepmother made her feel a part of the family. Ruth Gray later married Aston Barrett, and together they had six children: Isaac Newton, Ainsley, Aston (George), Cyril, Sheila, and Lloyd.

As the eldest, Blossom carried responsibility with devotion and quiet strength, determined to be a role model to her siblings. Gifted from childhood, she attended private school until age five. Entering public school brought challenges—she was academically advanced, teased for wearing her private school uniform, and often struggled to stay motivated when lessons failed to match her ability. In sixth grade, financial hardship prevented her from moving on to high school, and she remained in that grade for three years. A scholarship eventually came, but uniforms still required funds. With characteristic resolve and industry, she sold Bammy to raise the money—only to learn her earnings had been spent on shoes for her brothers. She did not dwell on these hardships; instead, she continued forward. Though she never attended high school, she later attended business college and earned certifications in bookkeeping and shorthand. Even then, excellence brought its own trials: because her shorthand strokes were so precise, she was accused of cheating, despite the tests being mailed from England to Jamaica. She persevered and graduated at the top of her class. When she later emigrated to the United States, she continued to grow beyond what she ever imagined, and if asked how she did it, her answer was simple: God.

Blossom’s working life reflected both diligence and initiative. She continued her entrepreneurial path by building an oven made of brick and zinc with her brother, Ainsley, baking and selling toto to a local bakery. After business school, she began her career as a bookkeeper. She worked in that role until 1961, when she married and emigrated to the United States. In the early years of marriage, her husband, Rufus, did not want her to work—something that was difficult for her. When her mother visited from Jamaica, Blossom began working a few hours each day, bringing home groceries as a cover. Eventually, she told Rufus the truth, and together they made an agreement that reflected both practicality and shared purpose: his salary would pay the bills, and they would save hers. They kept that agreement throughout their 48 years of marriage.

She later worked at an electronics store, where her competence and integrity earned deep respect. She helped the owner expand the business and became the manager, standing out as one of a handful of women in the field of auto electronics. She worked at Hamilton Stereo a/s/o Golden Voice Electronics from 1965 to 1990, until she “retired” to Wellington, Florida. Before leaving New York, she took classes in floral arrangements and CNA training. In Florida, from 1990 to 1995, she used her love for flowers and her floral arrangement skills to decorate homes and create wreaths for clients, as well as for close friends and family. From 1995 to 2018, she devoted herself to a successful career as a CNA, working until age 85—faithfully keeping a promise made to her final patient, a testament to her compassion and selfless care.

Blossom’s love story with Rufus began in 1960, when she visited New York to see her brother, Ainsley. When he picked her up at the airport, he brought along Rufus Beckles, a friend of Ainsley’s wife, Violet. Rufus was immediately smitten and served as her tour guide during her vacation. He asked her to stay, but she told him she did not like New York and returned home to Jamaica. Rufus wrote her a letter each week. When her mother asked if she liked him, Blossom admitted she did. Rufus proposed, and Blossom—though 28 and not required to do so—told him he had to ask her parents, simply to see if he would. He did. She insisted they marry in Jamaica; he asked only for a date so he could arrange vacation time. When she said she needed a ready-made gown, he sent not only a gown, but also a dress for afterward. They were married on April 8, 1961. She emigrated to the United States in November, and their first child, Ruth, was born on January 6th. Their second child, Cynthia, was born on March 31st. They lived in Brooklyn until 1971, then moved to Huntington, New York, and in 1990 moved to Wellington, Florida.

Although Blossom had two biological children, she was, as many can testify, “the mother to many.” As a teenager, her Aunt Emily asked her on her death bed to take care of her cousins—Knightly, Sylvia, and Daisy—who became her daughters. Her motherly care also extended to her nephews Mark, Locksley, and Daswell. That love deepened especially for Mark, affectionately known as Marco, when he emigrated to New York and lived with her family at 12 years old.

Blossom found joy in singing, Her favorite song being Blessed Assurance, and cooking—two gifts through which she consistently offered comfort and welcome. She loved to worship God through music, and it was not unusual for her to break into song on any occasion. She was a soloist in Jamaica and New York, and she sang in choirs in Jamaica, New York, and Florida. Church was a key part of her life from birth. In Jamaica, she attended Calvary Assembly of God which was right around the corner. She was a Youth Group Leader and member until she emigrated to the United States. In New York, she attended Richmond Hill Assemblies of God and Huntington Station Assemblies of God. In 1990, when she moved to Florida, she became a member of Trinity Church International. When Grace Chapel started in 2005, she started attending both churches. At the time of her death, she was attending Grace Chapel. Her home—whether in New York or Florida—was marked by an open door and a spirit of hospitality that made everyone feel they belonged. Through her cooking, she made love tangible: bun at Easter, fruit cakes at Christmas, soup on Saturday, mango care packages, and late nights preparing food so her grandchildren would have something in the morning.

Her service extended beyond her home into her church and community. Blossom served as a Missionette co leader, Sunday school teacher, and Cell Group Leader for many years. Many cherished the seasons of learning under her guidance. Yet above all, she was a prayer intercessor. She prayed throughout the day, sometimes pausing mid-conversation to pray. As recently as six months ago, she prayed for people receiving groceries and for everyone who greeted her at church. In her final days, she prayed for her nurses and for all who came to see her—remaining faithful in service until she could no longer do so.

Blossom was a woman of God who loved others with her whole heart. Whether offering a smile, a prayer, or a plate of food, she shared the love of Christ with gentleness and sincerity. Her home was often filled with laughter, food, and games. She also gave in practical ways, using every legal method to help family and friends emigrate to the United States. Her home in New York became, in effect, a mini-immigration agency, and she carried that same helpful spirit into life in Florida. Many celebrating her life are direct recipients of her efforts. Though only 5’2”, she carried herself with remarkable strength, and her faith—steady, honest, and enduring—helped her face what seemed impossible. Her resilience, loyalty, and thoughtful care will remain a lasting imprint on all who knew her. She consistently pointed others toward Jesus and lived as a testament to that devotion.

For 93 blessed years, Blossom lived a life of unwavering faith, love, and service to God. The many cards, calls, visits, flowers, meals, gifts, and thoughtful expressions of sympathy are a testament to the countess lives she touched. Your prayers and support have brought us comfort and strength during this difficult time. We are deeply grateful for your kindness and for celebrating Blossom’s beautiful life and lasting legacy.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ruth, Sam and Aston, and her siblings: Isaac Newton, Cyril, Sheila, Ainsley and Lloyd. She is survived by her brother, Aston, her daughters Ruth and Cynthia as well as her grandchildren: Michelle (Carl), Michael (Natalia), Ashley (Dwight) and Alex (Avery). She also had five great grandchildren: Carl, Karly, Isaac, Cayci and Cydney. She also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She will be greatly missed.

On behalf of the Beckles, Barrett, Dunbar, Butler, and Williams families we express our deepest gratitude. Our family sincerely thanks everyone for the love, prayers, support, and kindness shown to us during the passing our beloved Blossom Beckles.

Blossom’s own words reflect the foundation of her life: “The times when everything seemed out of place, I prayed. God answered and it built up my faith. Jesus said that we must love one another. He loved us so much that he gave his life for us.”

As Blossom always practiced: be quick to forgive and embrace every moment. May God richly bless each of you.
