
He was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio to the late Roman and Clara Ganzel. He served
with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict, he then returned to his home town where
he joined the police department and served for 10 years. Capt. Ganzel relocated to this area,
joined the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, moving up the ranks, attaining the rank of captain.
He retired after 33 years of service in 2003. Capt. Ganzel was also a certified scuba diving
instructor, fire arms expert and distinguished shooter. He was also an instructor for the Police Academy
at Palm Beach State College, and a volunteer with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary teaching students
about weather and the wind. Some of his hobbies were karate, sports fishing, pair roller skating, kick-boxing,
singing in a barber shop quartet, singing in church choirs. He played both the organ and accordion
sharing his love of music by volunteering his talents at several nursing homes and churches for the enjoyment
of his audience. He had a love for corvettes, and had served as president of the Corvette Club, and also
judged corvettes. He was a member the the Knights of Columbus, a parishioner at St. Luke Catholic
Church. He also enjoyed cooking, eating, and had a great sense of humor, and a great love of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father George Rawson, and his brother Jerry (his best fishing buddy).
Captain Ganzel leaves to cherish his memory his loving and caring wife of 17 years Louisette,
his sons; Daniel & his wife Harla, David & his wife Tammy, 5 grandchildren; Hillary, Shelby, Hope,
David and Tyler. Donald loved his pets and spoke of them as his children in fur coats.
His family will receive friends on Friday, April 1, 2011 at the funeral home between 6:00 & 7:00PM,
when his life will be celebrated at a Memorial Service beginning at 7:00PM. In lieu of flowers, donations
to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, would be appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to
DORSEY - E. EARL SMITH MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME.
