                                       A Memory of Mom                           
On behalf of my sisters Karen and Kate and all our family, thank you for spending this time with us as we celebrate our mother’s life .  Doris Florence Thomson was born June 18, 1934.  Twenty minutes later her other half, twin sister Dorothy was born.  Mom was short in stature standing only 5 feet tall but she always proclaimed with her other half Dorothy, they stood 10 feet tall.  She was a loving and caring mother, wife, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. Mom’s favorite color was blue, as were her eyes and she truly loved animals.
Mom lived a full life that only lasted 76 years, but those years made a heavy impact on many lives.  Mom was born and raised in Jamaica NY; worked for ATT and married our father Henry, December 18th 1954.  Dad was a sailor in the US Navy so our family moved throughout the Country many times.  Karen was born in New York; I was born in Virginia and Kate in Hawaii.  
In 1968 we moved to Florida for the second time; this time for good.  While dad was at sea, mom dealt with the contractors and built a house for us in the up and coming community of Palm Springs.  Did I say dad was a sailor?  Mom customized the house for her man of the sea with sea shells on the front, a porthole in the front door, and a flag pole that proudly displayed the American flag.
Mom always gave of herself and raised a family that played sports and was active in school activities.  With that said, mom needed a faster way to heat up the meals she had prepared for her active family.  In came the Amana radar range.  This was the prototype of today’s microwave oven but it was the size of a Toyota Prius. 
Mom went back to work in the late 80’s for a local architectural firm and retired in 2002.  Mom was a very strong woman who believed in God, Country and family.  Mom and Dad settled in Lake Worth and Dad passed in 1989.  Mom spent a lot of time with her sister Dorothy and Uncle Howard.  Mom and Dorothy went on cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska and Dorothy passed in 2005.  Mom’s vision became increasingly diminished.  This ended her ability to drive but she was able to remain independent due to her friends Pat, Barbara and Uncle Howard.  Mom became very active in Our Savior Lutheran Church.
As I said in the opening sentence; thank you for joining us as we celebrate our Mother’s life for it truly is a celebration. Mom was steadfast in her love of God.  Mom lived her life knowing that her time here with us was just the beginning; with an eternal life to follow. She trusted in God’s word and proclaimed her love and faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She raised a family with that same faith and love.  Mom’s remains will be taken out to sea so she can join our father who was placed there 21 years ago.
We would like to thank all our friends for the outpouring of love and support; Pastor Whipperman and Pastor Fountain for their love and spiritual guidance and the ladies of Our Savior Lutheran for the beautiful reception following this service.
Mom-thank you for who you were and all you did for us.  You may be away from us now but you will certainly be with us every day.  We love you Mom.

As far back as memory will take me, I remember my Mother teaching me this 'Bed Time Prayer.'

"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lorn my soul to keep.  If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take."

Born identical twins, Doris, born 20 minutes before Dorothy, demanded that Dorothy be respective of her age.  And she was serious.

It was astonishing how similar they were in health and in sickness.  They would greet each other during times of joy and celebration by sending the exact same greeting card to each other even though they were miles apart.  They each suffered eye problems, feet problems and breathing problems.  However, their beleif in the Lord, was devout and unquestioned.

As I wandered through my life, it wasn't until my recent years that their beleif in the Lord God, became me.  To you the Bechtel family and my Daughter Donna, I am eternally grateful.  And now we come full circle... "Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep."

My prayers are with Doris's family.  Before I moved to Boise, Doris sat behind me at Church, and she would tap me on the shoulder to say Good Morning.  She was a special lady.
My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

May you find comfort in your mother's presence all around you for she will live in your heart always.
