Jo-Ann Potter, age 83, went 10-7 on July 23, 2021. Born in Machias, ME, she was one of six children. She grew up in Bangor, ME and graduated from Bangor High School. After school, she went to work at New England Telephone and Telegraph. Growing tired of Maine winters, she moved to Palm Beach County in the early 1960’s and shortly found work with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher. This job led to the career that she loved. Jo-Ann became the first female detective with PBSO in January of 1974. While working as a detective she solved many cases including one that led to her being featured in True Detective magazine. She retired in January 1998, after 33 years of service, and enjoyed her time RVing, fishing and rooting for the Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins. Jo loved the first cup of coffee out of the pot, lobster rolls and leftovers. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Frances Potter, sister Peg Pope, nieces Kim Mayo and Molly (Ken) Buwalda, nephews Mike (Pat) Mayo, Chris (Natalie) Potter, and great nieces and nephews, Josh, Chase, Joey, Emily, Sam. Predeceased by her parents Frances and Wallace Thompson, her brothers Robert and Larry, sister-in-law Teresa and twin sister Lou-Ann. Her family and friends will miss her infectious smile, and bright blue eyes. Dear Jo-Ann, may you rest in peace. No services are planned at this time. Memorial contributions may be made in Jo-Ann’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or any wildlife rescue center.
