Age 84 of Palm Springs, FL passed away June 4, 2011. He was born in Oakland, CA. Manny was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marie Alonso.
Mr. Alonso was a World War II veteran having served in the Navy. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Mr. Alonso attended Oklahoma State University on the GI Bill where he received his degree in mechanical engineering. He spent most of his career as a professional engineer with a prominent New York engineering firm serving as a design engineering contractor for DuPont. He was instrumental in the design, installation, and operation of various plants producing some of DuPont’s most successful products such as kevlar and tevex. Mr. Alonso was also instrumental in design engineering for other clients all over the world in the textile, bottling, shipping, and port industries. His career encompassed over 50 years.
Mr. Alonso is survived by his god-daughter, Coral Fernandez of New York City, and god-son, Matthew J. Reilly of Annapolis, MD along with their extended families. He is also survived by his nephew, Alberto Alonso of Bilbao, Spain, and the extended Alonso and Lopez families in Spain and Mexico.
Mr. Alonso was a parishioner at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Palm Springs, FL where a mass will be offered in his memory. Friends may visit from 6:00 - 9:00pm on Friday, June 17th at Height’s and Hill Funeral Home, 115 Atlantic Ave., Brooklyn, NY. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 55 Cranberry Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201. Mr. Alonso will be laid to rest with his parents at St. John’s Cemetery in Queens, NY.
