My Dad was an amazing Father. He taught me to be kind to others, the difference of right and wrong and the value of hard work.  He taught me not so much like a teacher but by example. He allowed me my faults and my victories and encouraged me to become who I wanted to be. He loved his family and the mountains of Tennessee. He lived a great life it was just too short.

Bud: memory from Leonard Perez 

Circa late 1990's:
Bud Farrell was my friend, my neighbor and my fishing buddy. We would fish every time we could get away. We would fish in Wellington and also 20 Mile Bend towards Belle Glade. I remember once Bud 
caught a huge bass, probably 10 to 12 pounds. This was his biggest bass ever. He wanted to keep it but I wanted to release it. I landed the fish for him and put it back in the water and revived it while asking "What are you going to do with it? Are you going to eat it?". Bud said "no". I said "Are you going to mount it?". Bud said "no". Finally he agreed and I released it. 
He was not thrilled about releasing his biggest fish but he realized that I wanted to. He was not selfish even though he is the one that caught the fish. I miss my friend Bud.

I can't begin to express how much I will miss the man who taught me to swim and use tools, built my brother and me a tree house and go-carts and anything else we ever asked for, inspired and encouraged my love for architecture, and continually fueled my book obsession by building more and more bookshelves with me.  He showed me the importance of hard work, as he was constantly fixing up an old car, building something beautiful in his workshop, or lending a strong hand to a friend.  I was so lucky to grow up with someone who was a friend to everyone, constantly inspiring me to strive to be as kind and caring as he was everyday of his life.  I can't believe that he is gone so soon, but he will live on in the hearts and memories of the many lives he has touched.  I love and miss you, grandpa.

Dear Freida:
It was devastating to awaken to the news of Bud's passing this morning.   I was shocked and in much sorrow as Lisa sat in sincere tears expressing her own grief.  You and Bud are so special to the both of us and we are truly sorry for your loss.  Know we are praying for you and love you and are here for whatever you may need.    
 
It goes without saying that you and Bud are very special people to everyone at Farner.  Particularly for me, I have always appreciated the encouragement Bud (and you) have given with regard to our sports camps during the summer.  I always enjoyed having Bud bring out his old leather football helmet.  Next years camp won't be the same without him.
 
Lisa and I are praying for you and your family during this time of sorrow.  We know that Bud is in heaven and is being so amazed and awe struck at the wonders and greatness of God.  To God be the glory.  Bud was a loving man and whereas we know that he has left us with a special love and you with a lifetime of love that can't even be put into words, I believe he also got to take that love with him and it will forever be a part of his spirit.
 
May God's love and peace be with you.  May He provide you with comfort at your hardest hours and may you know Bud is now experiencing a peace of which we lack the words to describe on earth.  May the love you shared with him help bring you healing.

I am Bud’s daughter-in-law. I remember when I first met Bud. It was over at Craig’s house, his oldest son’s house. They would always have chairs outside, and Bud was never sitting down in those chairs at that time, he was always playing with Dylan and Brooke, his grandkids. Then we had these two and they came quite a bit later, and Bud and Frieda would stay at our house, Bud would get down, on the floor with these girls crawling around, down on the floor doing puzzles with them, which was just funny. I mean they loved their Bud, but to see him on the floor on his hands and knees (Brian says “Bad knees”). On his bad knees, with his bad shoulder showing them how to crawl. And I remember one night they were sitting there coloring, and Bud pulled one of the girls up on his lap, and he said “No, no this is how you do it” and he put his hand over hers “You just slow down, right along the lines”. He was really great with kids, and I remember telling Ellen, my sister-in-law, Craig’s wife, “Bud is a baby whisperer. This guy knows kids” And that’s something I’ll always remember, is how good he was with kids. And how much he liked to cook meat. The first time Bryan took me down to West Palm Beach Bud’s standing in front of 2 barbeque grills. There’s chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, shrimp and ribs.  I asked him  “How many people are coming?” and he’s like “It’s just us”. I asked “Where are the vegetables?” He said “Oh, mom’s baked beans” (lots of laughter). He just enjoyed being out there.

Leroy: 

Well I got to know Bud by working out here in the basketball yard with Bud, putting the basketball goal together and doing anything that was in the church. Bud was always one of the first ones that would come to you and say “How can I help you”. And he was there to help you. He just wanted to know where and when you were going to be. Me and Bud, and David Dean put these basketball goals together a couple years in a row. The first one took us 5 hours, because we went by the diagram (laughter). From then on, Bud threw away the diagram and just put it together. Bud was a great guy, he was good for the community, good for the youth, and he was always willing and ready to do anything that we needed to do. He loved everybody and we loved him.  He was a good guy. Frieda, we love her too.

Since he’s talked about the children part I’ll tell you another side of Bud. Any of you that knows us know that we have a 2-day yard sale. And we knew who was going to be here when we started to have the yard sale. It takes a lot of work to get a 2-day yard sale set up and then taken away when we finish, but Bud was always here. One of the things he’d come in and say “Girls! Where’s your signs?” If we didn’t have signs he went home and made signs. We certainly do miss Bud for many things. When Bud and Frieda came, because I was here when they first visited the church, when they came for a first Sunday we thought they were visitors. Well they came back for the next Sunday, still sort of visitors. When they came back the third Sunday they were one of us. We love them, and we miss Bud, and just never forget him for many reasons. But he was very helpful with the children and working with the children. As Ray said he could get one off to the side and they’d listen to him. Everybody just enjoyed Bud. It was a real pleasure to meet him. Our church really misses somebody when we’ve lost them. God bless all of them.

Wayne asked me a couple weeks ago if I’d make some notes and say a few things about Bud. He knows if I write anything even I can’t read it so I don’t have any notes. 

I can’t remember exactly when I first met Bud Farrell, I think it was in the year 2000. He and Freida had been very active in our church and in our community. One of the early things I remember about Bud was when we were in the process of building a new kitchen here. I’m not positive if it was Bud’s idea or if he just expanded on someone else’s idea, but he decided that we needed a commercial ice maker in our kitchen and he just knew where to get one. We have an ice maker in the kitchen thanks to Bud Farrell. Another thing about Bud that sort of amazed me: I was born and raised in Farner and I’ve been back here since 1997, but I would venture to say that more people in Farner and Turtletown knew Bud Farrell than knows me, or certainly he knew more people in Farner and Turtletown now than I do. Which, I guess that says a lot about him (Pastor interrupts and says; “Well he wore a helmet and you didn’t” while holding the old football helmet and people laugh). One thing that Bud was very, very interested in, as Wayne mentioned, was about the activities for the youth and community. Now I think it was about 3 years ago we had a basketball camp and there was, I don’t know, maybe30 kids here. There was a young man here maybe 5 years old and he had some difficulties and different people tried to work with him and get him to enjoy what was happening and take something away from it. Nothing seemed to work but I looked around and saw Bud and this little boy throwing the basketball back and forth. He was following Buds instructions. Bud was able to communicate with him when many of the rest of us were not able to. And that was very special I think. We’ll certainly miss Bud, and it’s been a pleasure to have known him.

Bud was a real inspiration to me. He was very supportive of the things we do here with the youth and the outreach. Now the thing about Bud is he was one of those guys – well I’m not picking on anyone, but when you get a little bit older sometimes you think it’s all about taking care of our self and being introverted- and Bud wasn’t like that. Bud was the kind of guy that saw the need of the children in the community. He also saw the need of the community. He was very supportive of the things that we do. We put this sign here for a purpose. I don’t know if y’all know this, but there are a lot of evenings when there’s a lot of kids that play on this parking lot. They play basketball, they skate, they walk, and we wanted to put this sign at a position where the kids’ll see this. We put a message on it from time to time about the love of God .We also put a message on it about the things that happen in our church. 

I appreciate Bud and Freida so much. We love you guys, we absolutely love you guys so much.

First of all I want to unveil our sign, so gentlemen if you’ll unveil our sign. We were fancy about the sign *laughter*. The sign says “Thanks Bud and Freida, God Bless You", and at the bottom: "In Memory of Bud Farrell” *applause*.  I wanted to give an opportunity to folks to make a comment about Bud.

My grandpa was the most caring person and the hardest worker I've ever known.  But I'm pretty sure everyone here already knows that, so I'm going to tell a story about him being a little bit of a troublemaker.
Last summer, I went to Tennessee with my parents as we did almost every year.  Grandpa was driving down those winding roads in his red truck and we came up to a whole team of men repainting the double yellow line down the middle of the road.  Grandpa passed the men working, looked down the road to make sure there were no cars coming from the opposite direction, and started drifting across that freshly-painted yellow line.  Oops, he said casually, as my dad and I turned around to see a second, squiggly yellow line running behind the truck.  I looked into the rearview mirror and saw the tiniest little smirk on Grandpa's face.  My dad and I started laughing hysterically, while mom and grandma question what's so funny.  Did you do that on purpose? my dad and I asked.  Grandma and mom were still oblivious.  No, of course not, grandpa said, as he drifted ever so casually back over the yellow line and left another squiggly streak down the road.  This time, my grandma caught on, and she was not very happy with him.  Bud! she admonished, Grandpa still smirking, my dad and I still laughing, and my mom in the back seat still asking what's so funny.  Of course, when my mom finally learned what we were all laughing about, she kept asking grandpa to run over the line again so that she could see it.  Grandma just could not believe that he did that.  But I think she got the last laugh.  When we got out of the car, grandpa found two big bright sprays of yellow paint behind the wheels of that red truck.  
We're really going to miss grandpa, not just for his silly antics that still manage to surprise us, but because he had the kindest, most loving heart.  I'm so lucky that I grew up with him as such a big presence in my life, and I'm especially lucky to have been the first grandchild, because I think I got the most spoiling out of him.  I'll never forget driving circles around the property in the go-carts he built us, days spent learning to design and build projects in his workshop, or nights spent playing dominoes on the porch.  I have so many wonderful memories of him and he will always have a special place in my heart.

I was lucky to have grown up so close to my grandpa. Many of my friends barely know their grandparents, only seeing them for a holiday or 2 per year, but for my sister and I visiting grandma and grandpas house was just another day. Knowing them so well has made losing grandpa so much harder, but I wouldn't give it up for anything.

I've never known any one who worked so hard for his friends, for his family, or just because there was work he wanted done. Anyone who's been to the property in Tennessee could see the fruits of his labor, and those of us who saw it as it grew are that much luckier.

Bud wasn't a man who could be content to just sit idly by, and it's comforting to know that he was up and about through the end of his life, just weeks after being visited in Tennessee by the twins, his youngest grandchildren. We'll all miss him, but more importantly we'll remember him.

My name is Brooke and I was lucky enough to be one of Bud's grandkids. When I think about my grandpa, sad thoughts aren't going to come to my mind because I wouldn't be able to think of one if I tried. Instead I'm going to think about the man that took the time to teach all of us grandkids how to drive go carts and three wheelers and even when we couldn't do it right or went too fast he wouldn't get mad but we would all just laugh. I'm also going to think about the man who would start all of his old stories with "back when I was a girl", and I'm still not quite sure why, probably just to make us laugh because that was his favorite thing to do. I'm also going to think about the guy who would always let me sit on his lap no matter how old I got.  

I was talking to someone yesterday and they said "grandpas always have a soft spot in their hearts for the grand kids" and that statement couldn't be more true when it came to my grandpa.  He was always with us kids playing games with us and making us laugh and just loving us. But more than all of that, what comes to mind when I think of my grandpa is the most patient and loving man I knew who loved to make people laugh and worked hard at everything he did. I am really grateful to know him and I'm glad y'all got the chance as well.

Sept 7, 2015 - Pete's memories of Bud Farrell

I just met Bud when he and I were stationed at NAS Jacksonville assigned to VP-16 Ocean Patrol Squadron. I joined VP-16 in October 1959 and  probably met Bud sometime during the first quarter of 1960 as I was assigned to various flight crews  flying as a "2nd Mechanic" directly under the "Plane Captain" which is the guy in charge of the aircraft (P2V Neptune) and crew while on the ground. Bud was. "Plane Captain".

I remember flying with him out of Iceland on at least one 14 hour patrol over the North Atlantic from Norway as far as the African searching for Russian subs.  We also flew out of Puerto Rico and, of course, Jacksonville many times. 

One day, probably in early September of 1960, I saw Bud in the squadron hanger working on his plane. He was up on the engine stand changing a Power Recovery Turbine (PRT) and he said to me: I hear you're getting out. Where are you headed?  I'm heading south.  Pratt & Whitney opened a new plant in West Palm Beach area. I was down there in June and they wanted to hire me then. But I was still in the Navy.  They said come back as soon as you get out. Bud said I'm getting out December. Maybe I will follow you down there.  I got out of the Navy on September 25th, had that weekend off and reported to work on September 29th.  During my time in the Navy my mom and dad retired and moved from Connecticut to Lake Worth and 1958. I had given Bud their phone number so he could get hold of me. Sure enough the call came the next day. Here comes Bud & Freida up our driveway and his 58 Chevy. Judy and I met Freida for the first time and Bud met Judy for the first time. I don't remember details but after dinner we had a lot of fun and conversation.  They needed a place to stay so I called mom to let her know that we would be spending the night with them because we were letting Bud & Freida have our apartment for the night. From that day on we were friends forever. 

To Bud's Family: Pete and Judy Crosson will truly miss this man.

Every time someone asks me who are the three men that I admire most in my life. Bud is always one of the first to come to my mind. Although I only was able to see my grandparents 4-5 times a year he taught me so much. He taught me what it means to work hard, be a man, love my family and how to carry the Farrell name and the greatest skill of all, how to do a headstand at the age of nine. We probably spent more than 30 minutes trying to do that. His diligence and commitment to his tasks were extraordinary. Each time I visited him and my grandmother in Farner, he was always putting me to work. I'd work hard but no where near as hard as Bud. He was so creative in his projects and how to solve problems. He is probably kicking himself up in heaven because I'm sure there were some projects that he didn't finish. He's probably asking God right now to send him back so he can mow his lawn just one more time. But I know God is putting him to work up there and I'm sure he couldn't be happier. Although it is such a difficult time, I am so encouraged by the strength of this family coming together like this to celebrate the wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather, brother, soldier, and friend that Bud was.

So sorry for your loss, I don't know where to start.

With your hearts feeling heavy, my thoughts and prayers go out to you.
God must have needed him, for something only Bud could do.

I call him my friend, but for you my heart is aching.
We know he's up in Heaven now; I just wonder what he's making.

I figure he's in the ultimate workshop, of course playing by the rules.
Providing he plays nice, he gets to play with all the tools.

All kidding aside, we lost a very special man.
I feel blessed to have known him, was always a big Bud fan.

Eulogy for Bud

Since I cannot be there in person to speak, I have asked Freida to have someone read my special thoughts about Bud.

Everyone here knows what a good, caring, unselfish person he was.  He would always be the first one to pitch in and help anyone in need.

There was NOTHING SLOW about Bud.  He walked fast, he worked fast, his brilliant mind could throw out solutions BAM, BAM, BAM!  There wasn't anything he could not figure out how to build or just fix it.  Even though losing Bud has left us hurting, we can all be assured that he has the tools humming in Heaven as he gets those projects caught up for God!
He loved his family and was so proud of ALL of them.  My heart breaks for their loss.  He was such a special Dad and a special Grandpa and would have done anything to make each and everyone of them happy!!
And, Freida, I will always have the beautiful memories of our trips together and how you and Bud were always there for me.  Bud never even complained about all my luggage!  Also, I still cannot believe how he would let us drag him from store to store and wait patiently (well, mostly patiently!) in his truck.  He just wanted us to have a good time.  I will always thank God for blessing me with the best friends ever - Bud and Freida Farrell!!

And thank you, Bud, for all the happiness you brought to all of us.  Please know that we will always remember you as a truly GOOD man, and we will always miss you!

MEMORIES  EMMETT AND RUTH deROCHEMONT
Our fondest and most memorable times with the Farrells are our many weekend campouts at their lake property in central Florida.  We did both tent camping and later with campers.  We remember the cookouts, swimming in the lake, and nighttime marshmellow roasts with all the kids.
I constructed an outhouse out of old motorcycle crates which folded up for transport .  We set it up in the woods with the usual hole seat, but I installed a regular toilet seat.  It sure made it easier on us all!
Bud and Freida are our best friends.  We will miss our weekly card games  Guys vs Girls.
Bud and I worked together at Pratt & Whitney for many years and retired at about the same time.  I will miss him at the annual breakfast which Pratt puts on each January.
I'm sure Bud has a place in heaven where he can work on his many projects.

The first time or two we played cards with Bud and Freida we played SkipBo.  Immediately, when it became Bud's turn, he threw down five cards in a row and got another draw of five, then proceeded to lay all of those down.  We are thinking, "Who is this guy?  Do we even want to play cards with him?  He's going to beat us up every time!"  So we decided when we played at our house the next week, we would play our choice of games. 
 
Later we discovered that Bud's favorite game to play was probably dominos.  Bud and Freida taught us a lot about dominos.  Freida kept us playing by the rules and Bud's specialty was to win most of the time.  That was okay because we really enjoyed their friendship.

When I first met Bud it was quite obvious that he was that one special guy that would soon be my brother-in-law.  In just a few months I was very impressed by the nice rock he put on Freida's finger.  You could see the love they shared.  Bud treated Freida like a princess.

After they were married I had to go to Jacksonville for radiation treatments every day for two months.  Bud would take me when he could.  He treated me just like I was a sister.  Bud knew I was scared  and he did everything he could to put me at ease.  One 
day I was feeling good and I made Spanish bean soup and we were never the same. All three of us were so sick and Bud never let me forget.  At the time it was not funny but over the years we had many good laughs.

Bud always helped my Mom and Dad with anything they may need.  Mama said he was just like a son to them.  He was the brother I never had.  I could go on and on about the good deeds that he has done for family and friends or anyone else that needed help.

Bud a I were always trying to get one on each other, but I think he bested me. I received a call from a woman who said she was with the U.S. Coast Guard and wanted to know if I was the owner of a G White Boat. I told Her I was and that my boat was in storage in West Palm. She continued with my boat had been found washed up on the beach and was in bad shape and that it had been hard 
to get the numbers and track me down. At that I was thinking I had insurance or at least the storage place did. That's when she dropped the bomb!  She said that they needed me to come in to their office right a way because they had found an illegal subtance 
on board. At that point my only defense was that someone had taken my boat and that I had nothing to do with any Drugs found on board.  At that point when I was about to come unglued I heard the laugh, it was Bud.  He and his Sister had duped me big time and I vowed to pay them back but never did.

I was 11 years old when Bud married my big sister Freida.  After Bud and Freida's wedding I remember crying my heart out because I thought Bud was taking my sister away from me.  Boy was I wrong!!!  It did not take long for him to win my heart and I accepted him just like a brother.  He was a fantastic brother-in law and I will miss him very much!
One story I remember is one that Bud would never let me forget!  Bud and Freida wanted me to experience and see other parts of the country since I had never left the state of Florida.  They were very generous and invited me to go on several family vacations with them to Indiana.  I enjoyed many fun times with them, Bud's sister Verris, and the Farrell family.  This vacation had come to an end and Bud's Mom had graciously prepared breakfast for us before we left.  If you ever traveled with Bud you know he left early in the morning and loved to drive the scenic back roads.  This scenic back road was in the mountains and had lots of sharp curves.  As he was driving around the mountain happy as can be I suddenly got very car sick.  I tried to hang my head out the window but did not make it in time so I initiated his new car inside, outside, and worst of all the spaces between the car door window.  I could tell by the look on Bud's face that he was disappointed about his car but he was nice about it.  He said the car still had evidence of my car sickness the day he sold it years laternever could get it totally clean.  He loved to tell that story at least once a year when we were together.  He forgave me but he sure did give me a hard time, in jest of course, over the years!
Bud knew I needed a car after high school to go to work 15 miles away.  He called up one day and said he had found me a 1962 Chevy Impala.  I had no idea this was in the works.  He helped set up the financing for me and my payments were $32.16 a month.  I loved that car!
Bud was a wonderful son-in-law as well.  Our parents loved him.  There was always a project that needed work when Bud and Freida visited and Bud was always willing to help them through the years.
I appreciate and love Bud and Freida very much and the opportunities they gave me.  Their impact on my life was tremendous!

My earliest memory of Bud was his giving me a shoe tying lesson while waiting for the kindergarten bus. 

I watched him pour sinkers from melted lead for fishing. I remember his catching catfish and big carp from the creek behind the house. I helped him skin a squirrel once. Wow - it was perfectly normal eating a rodent. 

He took me for a ride in his first car - and old 30's or 40's car. I was probably six or seven, so forgive me for not knowing the model.  We were coming down Trester Hill and he told me if he gave me the signal, I was to crouch down under the dash. The brakes left a lot to be desired.  I didn't feel that cars were to be trusted after that.  

I think Bud was a student manager of the high school basketball team.  He painted his shoes red and white for a pep rally.  I'm sure he had plenty of team spirit. 

We loved the trips to Florida to Bud and Freida's for vacation.  I got to see Joyce (aka Joy) and stayed on when mom & dad and kids left. We would then go to White Springs, then on to Indiana.  When they lived in the duplex, Joyce and I would by banana popsicles from the ice cream truck - and a lot of ice cream. Bud and Freida were so generous to let us say and put up with me anyway. 

After high school I went to stay a year with them. They helped me get a good start on adult life. I will always appreciate that. 

I tried Bud's patience when he thought he could teach me to drive. I was so afraid in traffic and remember a really wide turn into traffic and I think that finished him off.  I didn't succeed in getting a license.  See previous car story. 

A last little thought....
Bud was moms favorite baby. I was told this more than once. This was based on his smile and disposition.  This pretty much carried him over the rest of his life.  He was and will always be loved forever by many.

To My Brother,
    There is not enough ink or paper in the world to write down all the wonderful memories I have had with the outstanding man I had the privilege of calling my brother. 
   From walking the railroad tracks to Shoemakers when we were kids just to swim for a while on a hot summer day. Helping him by holding up insulation with him on the high scaffolding in the big building in Tennessee. 
   Special memory of his old Hudson with brakes that only worked part of the time and him coming home from lunch & stopping it against the big tree in the yard. 
   He was my hero, my confidant, best friend and the dearest brother. I will miss him every day for the rest of my life. 
   Please God keep him safe and please help those he left behind find peace.
