William Quitman Brookley II (“Quitman”) was born on October 16, 1956 in San Antonio, Texas. He passed away at home on June 23, 2024, surrounded by love. Quitman was first and foremost a devoted husband, married to the love of his life for nearly 50 years. A love that saved him and shaped him. A love beyond reason or understanding that will endure after his lifetime. He held his wife’s hand throughout all the good and hard times in life, up until his last breath. You cannot speak of Quitman without speaking of Kathy as they are one soul housed in two bodies.
Family was always Quitman’s first and favorite priority. We cannot remember a game, play, or family dinner he missed. Quitman was a father of two children and a stepfather of four children. The word “father” does not do justice to what he was to his children. Our father was everything to us and the world is a little dimmer in his absence. He did not have to tell us how to be a good person; he lived - and we watched - him be the most generous, reliable, hardworking, kind, accepting, funny, and loving human that has ever graced this earth. Quitman was solid and steady and worked tirelessly for his family. The love he had for his children is an endless sea that continues to carry them through life.
There are more than a million words in the English language, and if we used all of them, we would be unable to truly describe the goodness that was our father. He loved music and dancing; he loved joking around and playing tricks; he loved the Miami Hurricanes; he made the best pancakes we have ever tasted; he loved all humans and treated everyone with respect; he loved the underdog; he loved doing things for his family. He loved.
HE. LOVED.
Quitman was a successful business owner for the past 38 years. He was brilliant and naturally talented at his craft, but his customers will always remember his attention to detail. Nothing was quite perfect enough for him (even when the customer was very pleased), and he always wanted to do his best. No doubt they will also always remember how he loved to play music while he was working and was always good for at least one joke, most likely a few. He was also a talented and passionate writer and poet. His wife Kathy retains a wonderful collection of his words. He was a so-so golfer known to mutter “slice” as his ball sometimes veered left but was an amazing golf coach to many children over the years at St. Luke’s Catholic School.
He is preceded in death by his parents William Brookley and Elizabeth Brookley. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathleen Brookley; daughter Jennifer Brookley; son William Austin Brookley; stepdaughters Marie Boyette and Nicole Martinez; stepsons Donald West and Matthew West. Also, grandchildren Stephanie, Alex, Christopher, Savannah, Olivia, Madison, Tyler, Kylie, Brandon, Brooke, Katie and Quinn. And great grandchildren Addison, Asher and Ainsley. Also, sisters Marita Brookley, Melissa Robinson and Chelle Brookley.
Quitman will be forever missed, forever loved. “The song is ended, but the melody lingers on.” – Irving Berlin
