Benjamin Hernandez was born on December 9th, 1979, in Boynton Beach, Florida, to Marcelino and Norma Hernandez. He grew up alongside his three sisters: Veronica, the eldest; Jacqueline, his twin; and Ruby, the youngest. The family lived in Delray Beach, FL. where Ben formed lasting memories with his siblings and friends. As a teenager, some of his greatest joys included playing the quad drums in the Atlantic High School marching band, running to the beach, and spending time with his close-knit circle of friends.
In 1998, Ben traveled to Colorado to seek treatment for his spinal cord injury and, during his visit, fell in love with the state. A few years later he decided to make Colorado his home.
Ben had an adventurous spirit and a deep love for the outdoors. He truly embraced life, always eager to explore new experiences. His hobbies were as varied as they were exciting—scuba diving, trailing in his adaptive track chair, biking, kayaking, whitewater rafting, boating, flying, skiing, skydiving, hunting, photography and going on road trips. There was no adventure too big or too small for him.
In addition to his adventurous pursuits, Ben was passionate about giving back to others. He volunteered at Craig Hospital, where he became an inspiring mentor and a strong advocate for accessibility rights. Through his work, he shared his personal journey of overcoming the challenges of life after a spinal cord injury. One of his favorite quotes, "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it," truly encapsulated his mindset, and he lived by it every day.
Ben is survived by his parents, his three sisters, his niece Devin, and his beloved children, Myles and Ava Grace.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who knew and loved Ben for the care, kindness, and compassion they have shown during this difficult time.
