Ernie Kozacek, 76, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away on July 25, 2026. Born October 30, 1949, in Denver, Colorado—the day before Halloween—Ernie carried a lasting fondness for the season and the traditions that bring people together.
Ernie graduated from Western State College in Gunnison with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, a calling he would make his life’s work. For many years, he owned his own accounting firm and handled taxes in the Lakewood area—work he genuinely loved and took pride in, serving others with steady care, generosity, and a kind-hearted spirit.
In 1987, Ernie married Kristine. He is survived by his wife, Kristine; son, Christopher (Corrie); daughter, Courtney (Mike); grandchildren, Brennan, Bailey, Marin, Michael, River and Jordan; great-grandson, Cohen; as well as many extended family and friends.
Ernie’s interests reflected both devotion and delight. As a boy, he bought a Model A at age 12 and restored it—an early sign of the patience and dedication he brought to the things he loved. He was a devoted Broncos fan and season ticket holder, and he also gave his time as a referee and umpire for high school games. He enjoyed trains and gardening, especially roses, and in his younger years he was a mason. He also loved the color purple.
Holidays were where Ernie’s warmth and humor shone especially brightly. He went all out—particularly for Halloween and Christmas—keeping cherished traditions alive, from candies at Thanksgiving to cutting his own Christmas tree. Those celebrations were never just decorations; they were his way of giving, welcoming, and making sure others felt included and remembered.
Always well put together, Ernie especially enjoyed dressing nicely and was rarely without a tie. He was easygoing and positive, with a great sense of humor and a well-timed joke that could lighten a room. Family-oriented to the core, he could be counted on to show up—steadily, faithfully, and with genuine care—at every family function. His presence will be deeply missed and warmly remembered.
An informal Celebration of Life Gathering will be held at Advantage Runyan Stevenson, 6425 West Alameda Ave, Lakewood, CO 80226, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.
