Fidel was born on March 3, 1927, in Spearville, Kansas, a small community outside Dodge City, Kansas, to Christobal Hernandez, a hardworking railroad worker, and Maria Padilla. He graduated from Spearville High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army during World War II, where he worked in the motor pool and as a cook. Following his honorable discharge, Fidel moved to Denver, Colorado and began his long career with the United States Post Office as a dedicated mail carrier.
In Denver, Fidel met the love of his life, Rayo Fierro. Together they shared 75 beautiful years of marriage until Rayo went home to the Lord on March 4, 2016. Their union was blessed with five children: Cynthia, Robert (Linda), Gloria (Lenny), Steven, and Tammy (Terence).
Fidel was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rayo and daughters Cynthia and Gloria; and loving grandson Eric Thomas Alejandro Hernandez.
Fidel is survived by his loving sons Robert “Bob” (Linda) Hernandez and Steven Hernandez; his daughter Tammy (Terence Martinez) Guerra; six cherished grandchildren Cindy (George) Trujillo, Cathy (Andrew) Menzella, Dustin (Lauda) Ramsey, Matthew (Becca) Ramsey; Tarah Guerra. And 6 Great-grandchildren —Noah Trujillo, Caley Trujillo, Cecelia Hernandez, Cirene Hernandez, Layla Ramsey, and Jamison Ramsey; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
A man of vision and determination, Fidel purchased one of the first homes built in Thornton, Colorado before later buying a new home in Denver’s Westwood neighborhood. He expanded his home to welcome his brothers and sisters, helping them establish new lives and careers—many following his path to the Post Office. Ever entrepreneurial, Fidel and Rayo later owned and operated a small restaurant in the Washington Park area, serving their community together with love and dedication.
Fidel will be remembered for his strong work ethic, devotion to family, generous spirit, and unwavering faith. He was a pillar of strength for generations and leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, unity, and love.
Though he is no longer with us in body, his love and example will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
