Joyce Annette Rae

Joyce Annette (Eos) Rae, age 92, died peacefully on August 31st, 2026, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Brighton, Colorado where she had resided since April 2022. Joyce was born in Bailey, Colorado on July 30th, 1934, to Alice L. Eos and Eric A. Eos. Joyce had an older brother Alan and a younger brother Ben. Joyce and her brothers attended their first years of school in a one-room school converted from a chicken house on the Eos property near Bailey. A few years later grade school began in Pine, Colorado where Joyce met and became best friends with sisters Carolyn and Mary Rae. They would later become her sisters-in-law after she met and married their older brother John.

Joyce and her brothers worked at the family Eos Sawmill where they helped cut trees and rode draft logging horses. The horses drug the cut trees back to the mill. The trees were made into lumber materials and house logs. Her father Eric built the mill from the ground up while building the family log home.

Eric and Alice then bought a small parcel of land in Arvada, Colorado and built a house for Joyce, Alan, and Ben to live while they attended high school. Each of them graduated from Arvada Senior High School.

Joyce then attended the Colorado Institute of Art where she earned an Art Degree. She and her brothers made wooden picture frames from trim molding and sold them to the art students for pocket change so they could go to the movies.

For many years, the Eos family went square dancing at The Buffalo Creek Hotel in Buffalo Creek, Colorado, which was owned by the Rae family. Joyce's friends Carolyn (Rae) Allen and Mary (Rae) Jones lived there. They had an older brother John, who was in the Army for a few years. After he came home from the service, his family introduced him to Joyce. They were married in 1955. John was a lineman with Mountain Bell. They bought the Arvada house from the Alice and Eric Eos so they could raise a family. Daughter Julie is the oldest, and twin boys Joel and Jamie are several years younger.

Joyce loved sketching, drawing, working with oil paints and pastels and was a talented artist. She also loved raising and riding Arabian horses and raising cattle. She volunteered with the local 4H horse club for years.

Joyce was married to John L. Rae in 1955 until his death in 1985. Joyce continued to live in the Arvada home until 2020 when she moved in with daughter Julie and her husband Daniel Kloberdanz. From there she moved to Brookdale Assisted Living.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents, Eric and Alice Eos, her brother, Alan Eos, and her husband, John Rae.
