Len was born in Washington DC, attending St. Anne’s Catholic Elementary School, St. John’s Military Academy High School and Georgetown University. After serving four years in the US Air Force, he completed his education at Arizona State University graduating with a degree in geology.
Joanne Holman and Len were married in Phoenix in 1958 and shortly thereafter he began his career with the United States Geological Survey in Washington DC, transferring to the Denver Federal Center in 1960.
Over the years Len had many challenging hobbies—some of which were cave exploration, fencing, repelling, ice climbing, competitive shooting, cross-country skiing and square dancing. He was a gun safety instructor for his division of the USGS. He was frequently found remodeling something in his home or helping with a project with one of his daughters and their youth organizations. After his retirement he was a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol and enjoyed wood carving with the Colorado Carver’s Club. Retirement years also brought time to travel overseas and visit those beloved grandchildren. Len’s dry sense of humor, kind, quiet demeanor and desire to do what was right will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be sent to: Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC, 20090-6011,The Civil Air Patrol Cadet Unit, or your favorite non-profit organization.
